  1. FORMATTING PARAGRAPHS

  2. What is a paragraph? • Paragraph - A group of related sentences that present and develop one main idea. • PARAGRAPH INDENT is the distance between paragraph boundaries and the page margins, while margins apply to the entire document, indents apply to paragraphs. Indents are offsets from the margins not the edge of the page. • Using Tabs - To begin a new paragraph, you generally press (Tab). Every time you press (Tab), the insertion point moves 1/2 inch to the right, which is the default distance between tab stops. • The default tab stops are indicated in the shaded area beneath the ruler by small marks every 1/2-inch.

  3. TYPES OF PARAGRAPH INDENTS • Standard (no indent) - Blocked Paragraphs - meaning that the paragraph starts at the left margin. • First-line indent - The first-line indent is the distance from the left indent, not the left margin. All other lines begin at the left margin. • You should set a first-line indent rather than simply pressing (Tab). Setting a first-line indent enables you to key consecutive paragraphs with a first-line indent without having to press (Tab) at the beginning of each paragraph.

  4. PARAGRAPH INDENTS • Left indent - When all lines are indented, the text is sometimes called "nested" text. • Right indent - Right indents are usually combined with left indents to set off text. • Left and right combination indent - A combination left and right indent is often used for long quotes in reports. • Hanging indent - Hanging indents are usually used for enumerated or bulleted items. The first line extends to the left of the other lines.

  6. MARGINS • Margins are the blank space bordering the printed or written area on a page.

  7. Line Spacing • Use the Line Spacing feature to change the amount of white space left between lines of text. • Single spacing, one-and-a-half spacing, and double spacing are common to most software.
