  1. GTSTRUDL User’s Group Annual Meeting - 2012 STANDBY LIQUID CONTROL TEST TANK June 14, 2012Parimal Gandhi, PE Sr. Engineer

  2. PURPOSE : SBLC TEST TANK • To ensure that the SBLC Test Tank is supported adequately such that it will not fail and impact the surrounding safety related valves and piping during a seismic event. • .

  3. AGENDA : SBLC TEST TANK • BACKGROUND SBLC SYSTEM • NRC INFORMATION NOTICE 2012-01 • TANK & SUPPORT MATH MODEL • DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF TANK STRUCTURE • RESULTS • SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS

  4. BACKGROUND : SBLC SYSYTEM SBLC TEST TANK SBLC STORAGE TANK If Control Rods are not available, then use Boron to absorb neutrons

  5. BACKGROUND: SBLC TEST TANK • The SBLC test tank is a stainless steel, 220 gallon tank used for performing surveillances on the SBLC system. • During pump operability test, demin water is added to the test tank, the SBLC storage tank is isolated from the pumps, the SBLC test tank is aligned to the pumps. • SBLC test tank is not safety related. • SBLC test tank is designed for seismic II/I criteria.

  6. NRC INFORMATION NOTICE 2012-01 • To inform addressees of recent operating experience related to seismic concerns principally issues involving tanks. • The SBLC test tank was not seismically qualified when they contained water. • The SBLC test tank could potentially fall over or collapse during a seismic event and impact safety-related equipment located nearby.

  7. TANK & SUPPORT MATH MODEL

  8. TANK & SUPPORT MATH MODEL

  9. TANK & SUPPORT MATH MODEL • The SBLC test tank : modeled as an open tank consisting of SBHQ6 & SBHT6 plate bending finite elements. • Supporting structures : schedule 40 pipes, modeled as column elements. • Support Base plates: Plate bending finite elements SBHQ6 & SBHT6. • Concrete & Bolts : Nonlinear spring elements

  10. DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF TANK STRUCTURE Ref.: Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering By Nathan M. Newmark and Emilio Rosenblueth

  11. DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF TANK STRUCTURE

  12. DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF TANK STRUCTURE

  13. DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF TANK STRUCTURE For Bolted Steel Structure 5% Damping DBE Horizontal Acceleration Response Spectra

  14. DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF TANK STRUCTURE

  15. RESULTS: SBLC TEST TANK • Max. Stress = 22.895 ksi < 0.9x30 =27.0 ksi ok.

  16. RESULTS: SBLC TEST TANK • Max. Stress = 19.836 ksi < 0.75x30 =27.0 ksi ok.

  17. RESULTS: SBLC TEST TANK

  18. SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS • The supporting structure for SBLC test tank is adequate for storage of 30” of water during a seismic event.
