  1. GOLF ETIQUETTE AND RULES

  2. ETIQUETTE

  3. What are some general etiquette “rules”?

  4. What are some general etiquette “rules”? • Never talk while someone else is hitting the ball. • Never stand directly behind or in front of a person swinging. • Never move or make noise while another person is hitting the ball. • At Tashua Knolls, never wear jeans. • If a ball appears to be going toward another player, yell “FORE”!

  5. What are some general etiquette “rules”? • Play quickly!! Be ready to hit when it is your turn. • Take no more than 1 or 2 practice swings. • No cell phones! FCIAC rules call for disqualification during matches. • You may not agree to waive the rules – disqualification.

  6. RULES FOR THE TEE BOX

  7. What are some rules for the tee box?

  8. What are some rules for the tee box? • Your ball should have a personalized mark on it. • You tee the ball between the tee markers and 2 club lengths behind. • If the ball falls off the tee, but you weren’t trying to swing at it, you may replace it with no penalty. • If you swing and the ball moves a few inches, you may not retee the ball. • The ball is considered “in play” once it has been struck on the tee and until it is holed out in the cup.

  9. RULES FOR THE FAIRWAY

  10. What are some rules for the fairway?

  11. What are some rules for the fairway? • You may only carry 14 clubs in your bag. • You may not borrow clubs or balls from anyone. • Any intentional swing at the ball is counted as a stroke. • You may not ask for advice from another player, except for yardage markers, location of hazards, green, etc. • If you think you might have lost your ball, or you did not see where it ended up, hit a provisional ball. (A lost ball means you have to return and hit another with a 1 stroke penalty.) According to Sarah that is called the “walk of shame”. • Make sure you are hitting the correct ball.

  12. UNUSUAL EVENTS ON THE GOLF COURSE

  13. What are some unusual events on the golf course?

  14. What are some unusual events on the golf course? • If your ball or feet are in casual water, you can have a free drop 1 club length from the water. • If you accidentally hit the wrong ball, return to where the mistake took place, put down your own ball, hit it, and take a 2 stroke penalty.

  15. What are some unusual events on the golf course? • If a ball is unplayable, with a 1 stroke penalty, there are 3 options: replay the ball from original spot, drop a ball 2 club lengths away, and drop behind keeping the hole in line with unplayable ball. • If your ball or feet are in ground under repair, you can have a free drop within 1 club length from ground under repair. • If loose impediments (sticks, leaves, etc) obstruct your swing, you may move them with no penalty as long as the ball does not move.

  16. What are some unusual events on the golf course? • If you and your opponent cannot agree on the rules, play a second ball, keep both scores and ask the coaches or the pro at the end of the match.

  17. What are some unusual events on the golf course? • If you ball is next to a man-made object, you get a free drop within 1 club length no nearer the hole. • If your ball is next to a natural object (tree, rock, bush, etc) you do not get free relief. Either play it as it is, or deem it unplayable.

  18. HAZARDS

  19. What is a hazard? A ball in a hazard cannot be considered lost. As long as all the players agree that the ball went into the hazard.

  20. What do the colored hazard markers mean? • White – out of bounds. With a 1 stroke penalty, you mustrehit the ball from the original position. • Yellow – water. With a 1 stroke penalty, you can rehit the ball from the original position or place the ball back from the yellow line as far as you like. For no penalty you may play it out of the water. No practice swings in the hazard. You cannot ground the club. • Red – lateral. With 1 stroke penalty, you can rehit the ball from • the original position or place the ball 2 club lengths from red line. No practice swings in the hazard. You cannot ground the club. For no penalty, you may hit it out of the hazard.

  21. What is the other hazard?

  22. What is the other hazard? • Sand traps (bunkers) - you may not ground your club or take a practice swing. • Rake the sand after you are through. • If there is casual water in the bunker, you may take a free drop, but it has to be in the bunker, no closer to the hole.

  23. RULES FOR THE PUTTING SURFACE (GREEN)

  24. What is proper etiquette for the putting green?

  25. What is proper etiquette for the putting green? • On the putting green, do not stand directly behind the hole while a player putts, nor step in their line, nor cast a shadow over their line. • Remain very still while another person is putting. • No bags are ever placed on the green or tee. • Repair any divots on the fairway. • Repair ball marks on the green.

  26. What are some rules for the putting green?

  27. What are some rules for the putting green? • While putting always ask the other players to mark their balls. If your ball hits another ball on the green while you are putting, it is a 2 stroke penalty to you. • Remove the flagstick while putting, or have someone “tend” the flagstick. The ball cannot touch the stick while putting. • If your ball is not on the green and you are hitting to the green, you have to decide if you want the flagstick in the hole or out, it cannot be tended. • To mark the ball, place the mark behind the ball and the flagstick carefully – remove the ball. Replace carefully. • All balls must be holed out – no gimmees!

  28. OTHER QUESTIONS?

  29. Do we play stroke or match play? Can you use a distance measuring device? What is a drop? How long can you look for a ball? What are “summer” or “winter” rules? When can you replace a golf ball? Can a ball ever be marked on the course, other than the green? What is the order of play on the fairway or green?
