Your mission: • Look at the pictures of rockets and shuttles on your desk. • Discuss each with your partner and decide what is a good/ bad design feature. • Make notes on your sheet. • Be prepared to feedback to the rest of the space cadets!
History of Rockets! • In 400BC, the first signs of rockets were found! • Hero of Alexandria, an Ancient Greek, invented the Hero Engine. • The fire created steam, which created a thrust which moved the sphere.
History of Rockets! • In the first century AD, the Chinese began experimenting with gunpowder. • They created gunpowder filled tubes attached to bamboo. • The rocket was born!
History of Rockets! Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) developed laws to explain how rockets worked.
History of Rockets! This rocket was the first to successfully fly with a liquid- propelled rocket on March 16, 1926. Fuelled by liquid oxygen and gasoline, the rocket flew for only two and a half seconds, climbed 12.5 meters, and landed 56 meters away in a cabbage patch.
History of Rockets! This all lead to the development of the rockets used today.
