Content Area: Science • Grade Level: 2nd • Summary: The purpose of this power point is to inform students about the development and life cycle stages that a butterfly experiences. • Learning Objective: After this lesson, Students will have understanding of a butterfly’s life cycle and be able to recall the 4 stages of a butterfly’s life cycle with 100% accuracy. • Content Standard: 0207.4.1 • Accomplishment: Learning the 4 stages of a butterfly’s life cycle.

  3. The Butterfly Cycle has 4 main stages

  4. Stage #1: The Egg:  Like this • A butterfly lays an egg on a plant leaf. • A Caterpillar Grows inside Not like this 

  5. Stage #2: The Caterpillar • It eats as much as it can (mostly leaves) • It grows and sheds its skin several times (like a snake) • It stores food for its next stage • It spins a pad of silk on a leaf or stem

  6. Fun facts about Caterpillars! • A caterpillar’s #1 job is to eat! • A caterpillar has 12 eyes! • They have has many as 4,000 muscles • Their body moves like a wave. • A caterpillar sheds its skin many times like a snake. • You can find caterpillars in your garden! Like this one 

  7. Stage #3: the Pupa (Chrysalis) 10-14 days • The caterpillar forms a protective shell and is now a pupa • The shell splits open and the Butterfly that we see all the time emerges. 

  9. Fun Facts about Butterfly's: • Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow. • Butterflies have four wings. • They have antennae that help them see. • Female butterflies are bigger than male butterflies. • A butterfly flies from flower to flower eating nectar.
