  1. Feedback from the Hands On:Publishing catalogues with SAADA Advisors: Thomas Boch, Sébastien Derrière Tuesday, June 27th Martin Kümmel Space Telescope – European Coordinating Facility

  2. The Goal: “To teach participants how they can publish their catalogues through VO standards, using the SAADA tool.”

  3. The Ingredients: • Java • Tomcat • PostgreSQL (data base) • SAADA (version from yesterday) • VO - registry • Aladin (VO image viewer, version from yesterday)

  4. The Path: • Install and configure PostgreSQL • Install SAADA • Load data into the database with SAADA • Polish the data • Make the data available (deploy via tomcat) • Tell everyone about your data (enter your data in a VO-registry) • Explore your data via the VO-registry with Aladin

  5. The Result: • Around 15 participants • Not all worked “full speed” on the Hand On • Seven participants were able to register the prepared data • Three were able to insert and register their own data

  6. The Problems: • Unexpected situation (can I do this without root privileges…) • Compatibility problems (I have a PowerPC Mac…) • Large tools with complex GUI • One wrong CLICK is difficult to correct • I can not use the data in my own database. • Problems of unknown origin….. … just the usual things

  7. The Conclusion: • 70% success rate is low! • “Hands On” should NOT go for the extreme • Try to sell your software and services! • Spread creditability! • Motivate participants to use your software or to “spread the word”! • Things move to the right direction!
