  4. State of Ohio Ohio is home to approximately 800,000 veterans – the 6th largest state population in the U.S. Another 80,000 Ohio residents currently serving in U.S. Armed Forces More than 75,000 have served in the United States Armed Forces in support of combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the world since September 11, 2001. 10. Military Transcripts

  11. Military TranscriptsCCAF

  12. Military Transcripts • For the JST – use the ACE Guide • www.acenet.edu/militaryguide • For the CCAF – Use the CCAF Catalog • https://www.airuniversity.af.edu/Barnes/CCAF/ • Also look up Career Field Education and Training Plans • Use program codes on transcripts

  13. Other Military Evaluation Options CLEP Effective May 1, 2018 the state of Ohio now has a statewide CLEP policy (similar to AP) https://www.ohiohighered.org/transfer/clep Why does this matter? -The DoD will currently cover the cost of CLEP exams (only 1 try per exam) and provides study guides -If a student is VERY proactive, could get 20+ hours of general education credit out of the way while in the service and it’s free to them!

  15. Other Military Evaluation Options

  16. Other Military Evaluation Options • DD-2586 (DoDTAP - VMET) • Verification of Military Experience & Training • Accessed through Ebenefits (milConnect) under “Correspondence/Documentation” tab • Select VMET (generates a PDF) • Includes ONET codes where applicable (Occupational Information Network) www.dodtap.mil/login.html

  20. Military Transfer Assurance Guides What the heck is an MTAG? An MTAG is a military course that has been evaluated by a faculty panel and is guaranteed to be accepted, transcripted, and applied to the veteran/service members degree here in Ohio. (as long as the institution has the program) Those same faculty panels are also used for Ohio Transfer Module Courses (Gen Ed), Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs), and Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAGs). • Well defined process that has faculty/institution buy-in • Reach out to Registrar/Transfer Office to encourage more course submissions

  21. Military Transfer Assurance Guides How can MTAGs help my institution recruit students? Military “courses” are often what we in academia think of as certificates or other short programs of study Many MTAGs have more than one Ohio course as their equivalent *Current Stats • 163 MTAGs (5 more soon –LPN) • Matched to 285 courses

  22. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Potential Recruiting Strategy Conduct search on Ohio’s https://transfercredit.ohio.gov webpage using the Army’s course “AR-1715-0971V3 Integrated Family Test Equipment Operator/Maintainer” Results are next

  23. In many cases, this one course is equivalent to an entire semester worth of credit in an electrical engineering technology program.

  24. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Conduct search on Ohio’s https://transfercredit.ohio.gov webpage using the Navy’s course “NV-1715-2089V4 Information Systems Maintenance Technician” Results are next

  25. In many cases, this one course is equivalent two or more foundational courses in an IT/Networking type program.

  26. Military Transfer Assurance Guides So how can I reach out to students with those military backgrounds? We need to know where those students are located. Use the American Council on Education “Military Guide”, which can be found at http://www.acenet.edu/news-room/Pages/Military-Guide-Online.aspx Click on “Search Courses” then type in the “ACE ID Number” field

  27. Military Transfer Assurance Guides

  28. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Click on most recent course

  29. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Army MOS = 94Y School is located at Fort Lee, Virginia

  30. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Army MOS = 94Y School is located at Fort Lee, Virginia Search Google for something like “Army Bases that have 94Y”

  31. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Clicked the first link

  32. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Website is: http://www.goordnance.army.mil/UnitLocations.html Click on a state and it will bring up locations of bases/camps/arsenals/etc. that have Ordnance Corps soldiers – some specifically cite 94Y

  33. Military Transfer Assurance Guides Important note: Institutions should look into requiring Joint Service Transcripts (JSTs) – they are already requiring Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcripts But does requiring the JST puts a burden on the student? JSTs – can be requested electronically on behalf of the student, the DoD only requires a signature to be kept for records. (could incorporate into Admissions Application or other VA documents the institution requires) contact jst@doded.mil

  34. Institutional Examples

  35. Prior Learning Assessment Tools (PLA) • https://www.ohiohighered.org/PLA • Introduction to Portfolio Rubric (Video) • https://regents.ohio.gov/pla/IntroToOhioPortfolioRubric/story.html

  36. Common Credit Review Options • Infantry Training (Army and USMC) • Recent versions have some outcomes included in ACE guide • Course Exhibit Examples • 3 hours in tactical communications • 3 hours in human health & disease prevention • Can we do anything to better utilize this? • Credit recommendations for the Infantry Occupation Exhibits do not typically begin until the rank of Staff Sergeant / Skill Level 30 / E6 is attained. (3 hours in….Public Speaking, supervision, management, leadership, human resources, etc…) • Those with the rank of SGT / Skill Level 20 / E5 and below are left with the “Credit may be granted on the basis of an individualized assessment of the student” option. • What to do with these? Can we use PLA? Are you advocating anything?

  37. Common Credit Review Options • Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Training (survey said institutions interested in awarding credit based on some type of recognized certification) • Every unit has at least two people trained • 40hours initial training, 32 hours CE every 2 years • Certified through National Organization of Victim Assistance (NOVA) • Every service member is required to be trained twice a year 6 hours total (two 3-hour sessions)

  38. Common Credit Review Options • Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Training • Institutions that have some type of requirement with this topic • Bowling Green State University • Miami University • Ohio University • Sinclair Community College • The Ohio State University • The University of Akron • The University of Toledo • University of Cincinnati • Several Institutions offer optional training for staff/faculty

  39. Other Institutional Opportunities • Community College of the Air Force • General Education Mobile (GEM) • AU-ABC • Medical Education and Training Campus • Bridge Options

  40. Other Institutional Opportunities • Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) • 49 Medical Programs • 16,500 Students Graduating Programs Each Year • 14 Campus Buildings • 1,200+ Faculty & Staff • Numerous programmatic accreditations • Bridge Options (Handout in Folder) • Process (Same Handout in Folder)

  42. Research and Reasoning Will my school lose money recruiting these students? • Veterans/Service Members are more likely to complete degrees than non-veteran peers, have a higher GPA than non-veterans, more than half of degrees awarded to all veterans/service members are in high demand/high growth fields (potential good alumni). (NVEST report) • Generally use GI Bill (post 9/11), covers tuition and fees (most cases receive in-state tuition rates)-(NVEST report) • CLEP students typically have higher GPAs, perform as well or better in sequent courses, and more likely to complete a degree (CLEP placement validity study) • The Council for Adult & Experiential Learning (CAEL) confirmed more prior learning assessment increases completion and persistence (Various CAEL research)

  43. Secondary Effects (SAP 150% Rule) Federal Aid only covers up to 150% of a degree Refer to 2017-2018 Federal Student Aid Handbook (Volume 1 – Student Eligibility, Page 1-16) https://ifap.ed.gov/ifap/byAwardYear.jsp?type=fsahandbook&awardyear=2017-2018

  44. Secondary Effects (SAP 150% Rule) Can have an appeal process, but not required
