Aim: How are subatomic particles arranged within atoms? How were subatomic particles discovered? Describe Thomson’s “plum pudding” model of the atom. How did the results of Rutherford’s “gold foil experiment” lead him to recognize existence of atomic nuclei? “The atom is mostly empty space with a positively charged center called the nucleus.” True or False? Explain. Draw a diagram of an atom of Hydrogen using Bohr’s model.
Aim: How are subatomic particles arranged within atoms? Do Now: Copy vocabulary- Cathode rays- composed of electrons; Electrons- extremely tiny particles with a negative charge; charge confirmed by J.J. Thomson. Alpha particles- small positively charged particles. Nucleus- concentrated positive charge in the center of the atom. Contains protons and neutrons (together called nucleons.) Existence discovered by Rutherford. Protons- positively charged subatomic particles inside nucleus. Neutrons- subatomic particles with no charge but same mass as protons; inside the nucleus.
