History • ACLU created between 1919-1920 • Established during the Northern Ghetto (1915-1968) • Following WW1 • Fear that the Communist Revolution that had taken place in Russia would spread to the United States • Thousands of people without warrants
School-to-Prison Pipeline • Social Issues – Racism & Classism • Racism –Children of color (mainly African Americans) were pushed out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice system • Classism- most of the children had learning disabilities or histories of poverty • Zero-Tolerance Policy- Children that would commit minor infractions would not be handled by the school principals but instead the police would be involved
