The Bid • Flexible Support Grant from JobcentePlus • A Partnership • 50 young unemployment people (18-24 year olds) • Able to demonstrate that all starts have progressed closer to entering the labour market. • Minimum 50% into paid employment of over 16 hours per week • 3 months to complete. • Awarded £74,000 Funding
The Partnership • 11 Partners • Public sector • Private sector • Voluntary sector • Offering 144 opportunities
The Support • Moray Council Employment Support Service • Two Key workers providing one to one support to all clients. • Jobcentre Plus • Jobcentre advisors fully briefed to ensure referrals came in rapidly • Chamber of Commerce • The scheme was promoted to Local employers and they were advised that 50 young people would go through training to get them work ready and that they would be looking for potential Job opportunities.
The Young People • 52 young people were quickly identified by the Jobcentre Advisors. (41 male, 11 female) • All had been unemployed for over 6 months • The majority had one or more issues which need to be addressed including • Criminal record • History of drug and alcohol abuse • Low motivation • Disability
Step one • Introduction to Key worker and all referrals went through a one to one induction • Essential data was gathered and any specific personal issues identified. • The choices and process was explain to them • They were supported to make three choices and to rate those choices in order of preference.

Step Two • One to one meeting with Key worker and a Card issued detailing activities booked with dates and times. • Transport arrangements checked and if required arranged. • In some cases the Key worker arranged to take them to the activity. • Weekly appointments arranged with Key worker for CV writing, Job Search etc for those not going to Barnardo’s works or Springboard
Bernardo’s Works • Two ten day intensive courses. • Group work included: team working, interview preparation, development plans and motivation and confidence building exercises. • Training: Lantra Accredited Safe Lifting Techniques and Site Safety, British Red Cross Save a Life Training and Managing Money and Debt. • Followed by CV writing, individual Job search support, support to complete job application forms and interview preparation.
McPherson’s Training • HGV and LGV: It was identified that in Moray there is a shortage of qualified drivers. • 4 Introductory sessions a total of 20 people attended • The session was in 4 parts • 5 followed up with HGV training • 3 past and gained employment • 1 dropped out on health grounds • One individual who has dyslexia tried but kept failing the theory test despite a lot of support.
Essential Skills Moray • Six young people were identified as needing support with essential skills. • All six agreed to attend intensive support sessions. • They also received one to one support to search for employment. • And were offered support to attend other training opportunities • 4 gained paid employment by the end of the 3 month period their training continued after they gained employment.
Moray Arts Centre • Two day course • Intensive confidence and motivation building session • Using the medium of film and photography • That encouraged team building • 6 people attended the two day course
Moray Training • Certificated training in: • First aid awareness. • Basic manual Handling • Health and safety awareness
Moray Libraries Learning Centres • PC Passport one of SQA’s premier ICT qualifications • European Computer driving Licence (ECDL) • Advanced ECDL Word • E-Type. Touch typing course • 12 people took up these courses which were available across Moray
Skid Car Scotland Limited • A half day basic driving skills, accident prevention training for 3 students at a time, • 12 places available the course included: • Driving in winter and summer road conditions • Covering both over steer and under steer situation • Total loss of control. • And braking and avoiding obstacles that may appear on the road in front of you i.e. pedestrians, animals etc.
Outfit Moray • One day per week over six weeks • Key Outcomes for the Programme • Building confidence and self esteem • Improving self-organisation (turning up on time, effective preparation) • Improving team-work skills • Improving communication skills • Open Canoeing, Weaselling, Gorge Swimming, Rock Climbing & abseiling, Orienteering, Team Challenge & Review
Springboard • Into Work in Scottish Hospitality • Introduces, trains and inspires new staff to find careers in hospitality, tourism and leisure. • Intensive preparation course for 8 people • Which ended with the opportunity to take up a work placement in the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry.
Funding • All partners were paid by invoice for the work they carried out. • Not every place was taken up invoices reflected number of booked places not the number of attendees. • Money remaining was with agreement from Jobcentre plus used for: • Additional training e.g. CSCS cards, security SIA qualification etc • The funding could not be used for customer travel/childcare costs;
Issues • Starting in January and only having 3 months. • The logistics of ensuring 50 young people knew when, where and how they were going to get to activities. • Finding funding for customer travel/childcare costs • Motivating young people to attend activities and meetings. • Keeping all partners informed and making sure partners kept Key Workers up to date. • Matching young people to available Job vacancies.
The Results • 20 young people into employment confirmed by the Job centre by the end of March 2012. • A further 5 young people entered employment confirmed by the Jobcentre by the end of April 2012. • All referrals continued to be supported after the funding ended. • Support was offered for a further 6 months to all referrals should issues arise in their employment.

Successes • Young person with a criminal record in and out of prison from a young age has gained an apprenticeship with a traditional lime plastering company • Young person with Dyspraxia, dyslexia and PKU which is a protein deficiency, gained employment as a trainee chef.
