Discourage "begging" fundraisers--student should be activeusing their talentsand making a difference • Move away from self-serving topics; students should do things for others where possible
Scientific studies are OK if the mentor is qualified to supervise • The presentation is not the product. The product should have a purpose that goes beyond the presentation.
Some good questions to ask: • If you could do anything in your research area, unlimited by money, what would it be? • What in your research area are you passionate about? • How can you make a difference?
Don’t: • Come up with the student’s topic • Make the contact with the mentor for the student • Complete any part of the portfolio for the student • Accept anything that is less than the student’s best • Allow the student to turn in anything late without taking points off
The Portfolio • Designed to be a document of professional quality • Imagine yourself as a prospective employer of the student. Would this be acceptable?
