Doctor Becomes Typist Final Project Presentation Carmen Price
Charting Tools(CTs) • Feature of electronic medical record (EMR) • Doctors type patient reports • Type using forms, menus, check boxes
Administration’s Position Administration likes the idea of CTs • Patient information available quickly • Reduces/eliminates clerical labor costs
Doctor’s Position Doctor’s don’t like CTs • Long clinic days • Mountains of paper work • “I didn’t go to medical school to be a stenographer.”
Doctor’s Concerns • It will take longer to type my reports. • I won’t be able to personalize my reports • It’s distracting to type in front of patients
Bias or Reality? • Fear of change • Fear of new technology • Reaction to being told what to do Or…….would training and use make a difference
Question • Did doctors’ acceptance of charting tools change after training and use?
Method-Email Survey • Before/after training • Sent to 360 HealthPartners doctors • 109 responses, 30% • Training pushed back to 2005/2006 - 31 doctors before/after survey
Before/After Comparison • Small, but representative sample • Before training - 19/31 responses or 61% • After training - 12/31 responses or 39%
Results There was a shift towards acceptance of charting tools after training/use.
Summary • Projection difficult with small sample size. • Shift towards acceptance after training • CTs play a large role in overall acceptance of EMR
Recommendations • Continue same training strategy • Continue to collect data • Introduction of additional technologies if trend continues
