  1. Photosynthesis Unit 5-1 Notes Mr. Hefti – Pulaski Biology

  2. 1. What is photosynthesis? • Autotrophic food-making process • Enzymecontrolled reaction

  3. 2. Which organisms? • Allproducers / autotrophs • Every type of plant • All algae • Blue-green bacteria

  4. 3. Where does it occur? • Mesophyll layer of leaves • Mostly palisade cells • Chloroplasts • Grana are stacks of disks that absorb the energy of sunlight • Disks are called thylakoids

  5. The Chloroplast

  6. Grana / Thylakoids

  7. 4. The reaction 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2 • “Carbon dioxide and water (with light) yields glucose and oxygen.” light

  8. 5. When? • 3 conditions needed: • Light • Water • Carbon dioxide

  9. 6. Other factors… • Temperature must be between 0 and 35 ºC • Activates enzymes • Light intensity • Ranging from intense light orlow level indirect sunlight

  10. 7. Importance? • Glucose • Base for all food webs • Used in other compounds • Creates oxygen • Removes CO2 from atmosphere
