  2. Why are we here? Working with schools is important to us

  3. Overview Our Schools Program seeks to engage students in hands-on and minds-on learning experiences aligned to California’s content standards. • Connect youth to Lake Tahoe / their surroundings • Engage students in their own learning using inquiry-based and hands-on approaches to teaching • Educate in and outside of the classroom

  4. Linking the Formal and Informal • Learning can be enhanced through: • Orientation to setting • Clear learning objectives • Follow up activities • Tie to classroom curriculum

  5. Goals (year one) • Pilot modules for 3rd grade • Develop pre / post suggestions • Participate in local community enrichment and educational offerings • Identify and launch student service projects for middle and high school students • Host open house for teachers Source: Tahoe Maritime Museum 2007 Education Plan

  6. Beyond First Year Continue to expand the Schools Program • Develop grade level specific modules and continue to refine in-class and field trip experiences • Work with teachers and students on service learning projects • Continue opportunistic strategy of working with all interested K – 12 teachers

  7. Why? • Increase students’ content knowledge via diverse curriculum • Fulfill our mission to engage and educate people in local maritime history • Engage the Tahoe-Truckee community

  8. Design Process • TTUSD Teacher Questionnaire • What is going on in the area • Align to standards • Pilot the program

  9. Teacher Questionnaire Methods • Designed questionnaire to learn more about practices and interests • Got district approval and distributed hard copies to each school Key Results • Program must tie to standards • High level of interest in: • Logging and other uses of the Lake (e.g. Tourism, ice, mail) • Stewardship • Ecology • Majority of teachers are interested in in-class presentations + fieldtrips to Museum

  10. What is going on in the area • Observed existing field trip opportunities and talked to non-formal educators (e.g. Gatekeepers Museum, TERC) • Active in TTREC meetings

  11. Aligning to Standards Making Connections • Social Studies • Math • Language Arts • Science …the opportunities are endless
