Class of Heat Exchangers Design Heat Exchangers are the devices that are primarily used to transfer or pass heat from one fluid to another fluid without the fluids making direct contact. Their main function is to transfer thermal energy between solid surface and a fluid, between solid particulates and fluid or between two or more fluids. Heat Exchanger is used for both heating and cooling and usually is used for cooling. There are different types of heat exchanger available which are characterized according to nature of heat exchange, and direction of flow.
The common type of heat exchanger includes Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger, Plate Heat Exchanger, Regenerative Heat Exchanger, Adiabatic Wheel Heat Exchanger. They all are effective in variety of heat transfer applications. Although Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger is considered as the most efficient and important heat exchanger. Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger are mainly used in chemical process industries, conventional and nuclear power station, steam generator and almost in every type of industry.
The Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger consists of a set of tubes (called the tube bundle) which are mounted inside a cylindrical shell. Basically, these are used for high pressure application. Two fluids can exchange heat, one fluid runs through the tubes (called Tube Side Fluid) and another fluid runs over the tube (called Shell Side Fluid) inside the shell.
The fluids can either be a gas or a liquid. Shell and Tube heat exchanger is considered as a versatile heat exchanger as it uses large heat transfer area, using waste heat and can be cleaned easily. This is an efficient way to conserve energy.
