I’ve been in and around mobile for over a decade. During that whole time everyone has said that “mobile applications need to be different.” We’ve all said “you can’t just take a desktop application and put it on a mobile device”. I couldn’t agree more. • Mobile IS different than desktop. People use mobile devices in short spurts. You have a couple minutes and you’re looking to turn to your device to make a quick call, check posts, check mail, send a quick note, or just be entertained. That’s not the paradigm of desktop at all.
We’re seeing whole new solutions specifically designed for the mobile paradigm in consumer apps. Think about Twitter. Short, quick updates perfectly designed for mobile devices. Other examples include Instagram, Words with Friends, and even Angry Birds. • So why is mobile in the enterprise still stuck in the approach of just shrinking down existing desktop apps to fit on a mobile screen? Mobile for the enterprise is dominated by retreads of sales force tools, time entry tools, and performance management tools that are just shrunken versions of their desktop counterparts.
Take annual reviews for instance. Not only is the concept of an annual review flawed, but how valuable can year-old feedback be? And who wants to create an annual review on a mobile device in the first place? With mobile, why can’t we use Twitter-like messages to provide real-time feedback instantly? Imagine leaving a meeting and having your device know that you were meeting with someone that you might want to provide feedback on, and then giving you the chance to provide a quick piece of feedback that is received and acted on immediately. • That is not only designing applications for the mobile paradigm, but changing the way things are done to take advantage of mobile. This change is the key. We need to reconsider HOW things are done to leverage the new paradigm of mobile, and THEN use mobile to make it possible. • SuperConnect is dedicated to looking at all the things we do at work on a regular basis and focusing on how they could be better taking advantage of new capabilities in mobility, social media, gamification and other advances. We plan to change enterprises for the better. Work. Better.
