June 2015 witnessed the loss of 3 prominent figures, the legendary Ar. Charles Correa (1 September 1930 – 16 June 2015); the free spirited Ar. Hema Sankalia (1934 - 2 June 2015) and one of the foremost self-taught artists of India, Nek Chand Saini (December 1924 - 12 June 2015) who designed the iconic Rock Garden of Chandigarh. Surfaces Reporter bows in tribute to them! Special thanks to Ruturaj Parikh, Director, Charles Correa Foundation, for sharing insightful details about what made working with Ar. Correa so intimidating & special. Paying homage to Ar. Hema Sankalia’s contribution to Architecture, Surfaces Reporter is proud to announce a special issue on ‘Women Architects of India,’ to be released soon. For instance, the home and work areas of artists like Antoni Gaudi were actual material laboratories.
