  3. Installation Requirements • - The small crane inside the tunnel are sufficient (heaviest object ~400 kg). • - The speed and precision of the crane should allow direct and final placement of each section of the ZDC. For final positioning, a speed requirements is 3-4 mm/minute with placement precision of the order of +/-1 mm. • - The vertical clearance between the hook of the crane and the TAN must be of the order of 1m in the worse case, which is sufficient for our manipulations and installation. Oleg Grachov, University of Kansas CERN, Mar.10, 2006

  4. Hardware commissioning • Test and commissioning of the detectors will mainly involve HV system tests and LED and laser calibrations. • Each ZDC section will have been calibrated in the test beam and thus for each of the channels the LED and laser will be used for cross calibration. • We foresee all functionality of the read - out to be tested and operational shortly after the cables are connected and the electronics in the counting room is functioning. Oleg Grachov, University of Kansas CERN, Mar.10, 2006

  5. Operation and summary • The Day 1 detector implementation will provide physics results. The first ZDC is expected to be completed, tested and installed in 2006, second ZDC by May-June 2007. • ZDCs will be installed for the first 3 pp low luminosity runs (first 3 years) and for all heavy ion runs (The LHC pp luminosity profile assumes 1/10, 1/3 and 2/3 of the design luminosity for the first, second and third year) • Long time operation’s condition will be dependent from the degradation of the ZDC’s sensitivity due to the radiation damages of the fibers and PMTs.
