The Battle • On December 16 1944 Germany attacked the British and American allied lines. • Germany's goal for these operations was to split the British and American Allied line in half, capturing Antwerp, Belgium, and then proceed to encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis Powers' favor.
The Battle • The initial attack was by the Germans, it was a massive artillery attack that lasted 90 minutes. • The Germans used 1,600 artillery piecesacross an 130 km front on the Allied troops facing the Sixth SS Panzer Army.

The Major Events • The Germans managed to keep the attack secret so the allies were caught completely off guard. • In the wake of defeat the Germans were left very depleted of men and equipment and many retreated back to the Siegfried Line. • The Americans 89 500 casualties , 19 000 killed,47 500 wounded, 23 000 captured or missing ~800 tanks. • It is reports as the single bloodiest battle that was fought in World War 2
The Weather • At the beginning of this battle heavy snowstorms covered the grounds of the battle. • The armies were inadequately supplied for this, many did not have coats or gloves. • Luckily as the battle went on the snow lifted and the air force was able to drop supply's in for them.
