Statistics • One in ten adults suffer from depression • it is a mental illness that can affect chronic conditions like asthma, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity • Among 235,067 adults , 42% are diagnosed with depression. • depression can result in short term disability and decreased productivity. • Most common illness in the United States. • Depression is treatable but only about one third of those who suffer from it receive the help/treatment

  4. Symptoms. Some of the symptoms are: • Feelings of sadness • Difficulty concentrating • Fatigue • Remembering details • Making decisions • Decreased energy • Lost of interest in favorite activities • Loss/increase of appetite • Sleep disturbances • Feeling hopeless, sad, irritable, anxious, guilty.

Personal Experience • First got depression when she lost a loved one. • Had depression since she was 10 years old. • Resisted to get help at first but eventually convinced her that she needed it. • Went to a support group but didn’t work. • Went to get help for her depression a second time at Hathaway Sycamore. • Went to therapy sessions daily, then weekly, and now monthly. • Is currently getting help from a therapist that was recommended by Hathaway Sycamore. • Still has struggles with her depression but is slowly getting better with frequent sessions.

It is effective to talk about it because it helps people cope with their depression and makes them more comfortable to talk about it. • How can you get depression? People can get depression by either losing a loved one or having a traumatic experience. • How can people start getting help? People can start getting help by going to therapy sessions or going to a support group. • Why is it important to get help? It is important to get help because if people don’t get help they will feel helpless and will start showing mood swings.

  9. It’s Time To Talk The thing you can do is Don’t be Scared. “Depression drains your energy, hope, and drive, making it difficult to do what you need to feel better. But while overcoming depression isn’t quick or easy, it’s far from impossible. You can’t beat it through sheer willpower, but you do have some control—even if your depression is severe and stubbornly persistent. The key is to start small and build from there. Feeling better takes time, but you can get there if you make positive choices for yourself each day.”
