  1. STEPS TO A GARDEN SELECTING A SITE A back yard or some other ground area near your home in full sunlight is the most convenient spot for a home vegetable garden. Usually, the garden should be surrounded by a fence that is high and has tight fencing to keep out dogs, rabbits, and other animals. Soil, Drainage, and Sunshine A soil that drains well is necessary for a successful garden. Good drainage of the soil is key to success. The garden should get the direct rays of the sunshine all day if possible.

  2. PREPARING THE SOIL • Good soil for growing vegetables must be protected by preparing the soil using organic matter and controlling plant pests. A properly prepared soil gives the seed a good chance for root development, absorbs water and air quickly, and usually does not dry out quickly. • Plant pests compete with garden crops and slow the plant's growth. These pests include weeds, insects, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. They must be controlled or the garden will not survive. • Organic Matter • Organic matter, like compost, improves soil for growing plants. • Choosing Garden Tools • Very few tools are necessary for a small garden. A shovel, a rake, a hoe and a garden hose should be the basic items needed.

  3. ARRANGING THE GARDEN Careful planning will lessen the work of gardening and increase the returns from the garden work. Planting seeds and plants at random always results in waste and disappointment.

  4. SELECTING SEEDS Vegetables that are easy to grow include corn, cucumbers, melons, squash, pumpkins, cress, mustard, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi, spinach, onions, radishes, beets, and turnips. Those that need lots of water are eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and celery.

  5. PLANTING THE GARDEN • One of the most important elements of success in growing vegetables is planting, or transplanting, each crop at the time or times that are best for the plant. • Plant your seeds in neat rows and do your best at keeping the same seed plants together.

  6. CARING FOR THE GARDEN Watering In most areas the garden needs an inch of water a week during the growing season for best plant growth. By you watering, you are taking the place of natural rain, so don't double water if it rains. Controlling Weeds Weeds rob cultivated plants of water, nutrients, and light. Some weeds harbor diseases, insects, and nematodes that re-infest garden crops in succeeding years. By weeding, you give your garden a better chance to grow. Mulch helps a lot in the control of weeds.
