Francesca Bufarini and Sara Mazzoli Football Dictionary – Dizionariodicalcio Some Italian football words and Juventus story…
Hi! We’re Sara and Francesca, we’re Italian. We go to the same school but we don’t attend the same class (Francesca is older!). We both love sports, especially football, and we support Juventus! In this project we show to you some Italian words about football, our opinions and Juventus story. The Italian for football is calcio. A lot of people like this sport, in fact is the most important one in Italy. But other people pound it away – they say that footballers (calciatori) earn too much money! I think that is true, but no one can change our opinion: football is the best sport in the world!
This is a stadio – stadium Italian people love going to the stadiums, so they are often full. The biggest stadium is “Stadio Giuseppe Meazza”, where Inter and Milan play.
Passaggio – Pass • Goal – Gol/Rete • Assist – Ultimo passaggio • Penality kick – Calcio dirigore • Cross – Cross • Off side – Fuorigioco • Foul – Fallo • Calcio dipunizione – Penalty shot
In a team, there are • Agoalkeeper • Some defenders • Some midfielders • Some strikers:
The Italian for goalkeeper is portiere. The goalkeeper of Juventus is Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian for defender is difensore. The defenders of Juventus are Chiellini, Barzagli and Bonucci. In front of them, there are the midfielders (centrocampisti), who are Asamoah, Marchisio, Pirlo, Vidal and Licthsteiner. The strikers (attaccanti) are two and are changeable: Giovinco, Matri, Vucinic or Quagliarella often play. Other important players are: Pogba, Giaccherini, De Ceglie, Caceres, Padoin, Marrone, Isla, Peluso.
Buffon 1. 2. • Chiellini • Barzagli • Bonucci 3. 4.
Asamoah 1. 4. – 2. • Marchisio • Pirlo • Vidal • Lichtsteiner 3. 5.
Vucinic 1. 3. • Giovinco • Matri • Quagliarella 2. 4.
A lot of famous players played for Juventus in the past. The most important are: Boniperti, Zoff, Scirea, Tacconi, Cabrini, Brio, Baggio, Sivori, Charles, Haller, Platini, Zidane, Nedved, Trezeguet, Del Piero. Now, the captain (capitano) is Gianluigi Buffon.

We usually play football matches (partite) on Sundays, but every weekend some teams play on Saturdays. The “big match” is on Sunday night and Inter, Milan or Juventus usually play. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Actually, Italian football is not the best. There are many scandals and supporters aren’t polite: for example, some supporters of S.S.C. Naples throw many stones to the bus of Juventus. But Juventus supporters aren’t correct too: they always sing stadium chants against habitants of Naples. In the bargain, there are many racist stadium chants. For us, the best championship is the English one:
stadiums are perfect, the supporters are quiet and there aren’t dangerous situations. In Premier League there are also some of the best teams and best players in the world… But there’s a flaw: Juventus doesn’t play there!
