Ephesians 6:1 ________, obey your ______ in the Lord, For this is _____.
What was today’s Gospel reading? • The seed is the word of God. • The seeds fell on the wayside, on the rock, among thorns did not bring fruit. • But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
St. John The short
He was 18 years old when he went to the monastery to become a monk. • Abbot refused him first because he was young. So He tested John and said to him… • “O, my son, it is not right for you to dwell here, for this is a toilsome desert where you work with your hands and sleep on the ground. They have many fasts, prayers, and great tribulations (difficulty) • Why don’t you return to the world and live well?
To this, John replied, “If God wills, O, my father, do not turn me away, for I came to live in obedience to you and under the shadow of your prayers. • The abbot who never made a quick decision, took time to ask the Lord Christ. • An angel of the Lord appeared to him saying… • “The Lord says unto you, ‘Accept this brother for he will be chosen unto us.’”
One day, the abbot decided to give John another test, so he kicked out John saying, “I cannot live with you.” • What do you think St. John did? • So, John stayed seven days in front of the door without anger or violent reaction. • On the seventh day of this trial period, the abbot, while in church, saw a vision of seven angels holding seven crowns for the head of John. • With this sign, the abbot took John back to live with him in.
After some time, the abbot took John for a walk… • and found a dry branch and gave it to John saying… • “Take this, and… • What do you think the abbot asked? • ….plant it and water it twice a day.” • John obeyed and did as he was told.
The water was far away from the stick, which was a 12 miles or 20 kms journey one way and another 20 kms back. • After three years… • the branch grew and became a tree and bore fruits. • So, St. John told abbot, and the abbot picked some of the fruit and took it to other monks saying “My sons, take, eat from the fruit of obedience.”
What kind of fruit did St. John bear? Fruit of obedience !!! Another quick story . . .
