Psychiatric Technicians Make up a profession, which came into its own in the 1950s California began “certifying” Psychiatric Technicians in 1959
Psychiatric Technicians Full licensure was first required in 1970 as a result of California Senate Bill 298
Psychiatric Technicians PTs are licensed by the California Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians
Psychiatric Technicians Provide care to mentally disordered or developmentally disabled persons
Psychiatric Technicians Work in prisons, state hospitals, developmental centers, emergency rooms, community care homes, special education programs, and county and private mental health programs
Psychiatric Technicians Utilize scientific and technical expertise and manual skills to provide specialized care to populations with challenging and unique needs
Psychiatric Technician Students At Porterville College attend a three semester program of didactic (classroom) and clinical learning experiences
Prerequisite Courses The two prerequisite courses required to be admitted to the program are: 1) Anatomy 52 2) PTVN P009 Nursing Fundamental Concepts
Educational requirements to become a PT: High school diploma or GED Completion of an accredited PT program Successful passing of State Board exam
