The report covers the outcomes of DMQC-3 held at the University of Washington, focusing on improving consistency in delayed-mode decision-making for Argo floats. Key themes discussed include instrument errors, oceanography, software evaluation, and salinity data use.

Report from DMQC-3 For the 10th Argo Steering Team Meeting, China, March 2009. Annie Wong, Steve Riser University of Washington [see http://www.coriolis.eu.org/cdc/argo_rfc.htm ]
DMQC-3 was held at the University of Washington in September 2008. 30 scientists from 11 countries attended this workshop. 10 out of the 30 scientists were newcomers who joined the Argo delayed-mode effort since DMQC-2 in 2006. All Argo delayed-mode groups were represented at this workshop. This is a welcome progress since DMQC-1 and DMQC-2.
Aim of DMQC-3:To improve consistency in delayed-mode decision-making. • To that end, discussions at the workshop centered around 4 themes: • Review known instrument errors and failure modes. • Review regional oceanography, in particular complex areas that pose problems for float salinity calibration. • Review experience with various delayed-mode software (OW, CellTM, SIO GUI, etc.). • Review experience of experimental use of Argo profiles in DMQC reference salinity data.
Results from DMQC-3 35 resolutions, recommendations and actions items resulted from DMQC-3. Of which, 32 have been completed, or are work in progress. 2 particular items should be noted to the AST: 1) Johnson and Swift are to develop an improved ascent rate model for the APEX floats and re-estimate the CellTM coefficients for the SBE41. 2) The altimetry QC has successfully detected a number of anomalies in Argo data. All delayed-mode operators are urged to read the AIC Monthly Report to check for floats that are flagged by the altimetry SLA/DHA QC, and provide feedback to Stephanie Guinehut.
Follow-up from DMQC-3 Discussions on APEX floats pressure correction were carried out during DMQC-3, but no firm recommendations were made. This topic was further explored during ADMT-9 in Oct 2008, and subsequent discussions were held on the argo-dm-dm email forum in Nov and Dec 08. As a result, all APEX groups now agree to adjust APEX float pressures in real-time and in delayed-mode. Details of the agreed procedures can be found in the Argo QC Manual, Version 2.4 (www.coriolis.eu.org/cdc/argo_rfc.htm).
