Its regulated utility operations serve 4 million electric customers in the Carolinas, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, and a half-million natural gas customers in Ohio and Kentucky. Its Commercial Power and International Energy business segments own and operate diverse power generation assets in North America and Latin America, including a growing portfolio of renewable assets in the United States. 2011 Operating Revenues - $14.5 billion (for year ended Dec. 31, 2011) Total Assets - $62.5 billion (as of Dec. 31, 2011) Employees – Approximately 18,250 (as of Dec. 31, 2011) Total U.S. Generating Capacity – Approximately 36,000 megawatts (owned capacity)

Duke Energy Renewables: Duke Energy Renewables, part of Duke Energy’s Commercial Businesses, is a leader in developing innovative wind and solar energy solutions for customers throughout the United States. The company’s growing portfolio of commercial renewable assets includes 10 wind farms generating more than 1,000 megawatts ** of electricity, and 11 solar farms in operation in eight states providing more than 50 megawatts** of power.

OPERATING SEGMENTS U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas: With approximately 27,400 megawatts** of owned regulated generation capacity, U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas is the largest business segment and primary source of earnings growth. States Served – North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky Size of Service Territory – Approximately 50,000 square miles Total Transmission Lines – Approximately 20,900 miles Total Distribution Lines – Approximately 152,200 miles Total Gas Mains – Approximately 7,200 miles Total Gas Service Lines – Approximately 6,000 miles

International Power Generation Facilities: International Energy: International Energy principally operates and manages power generation facilities and engages in sales and marketing of electric power, natural gas, and natural gas liquids primarily in Latin America. It maintains almost 4,300 megawatts** of owned capacity. ** All of the generation information in this document is as of Dec. 31, 2011. Duke Energy will be retiring several older units and beginning commercial operation of new ones during the course of 2012.

Safety Culture Management and leadership in all areas of the company have laser-like focus on safety.  The tone at the top comes from the EHS Steering Team which is chaired by an Executive Vice President with Senior Vice Presidents representing each business unit. Business units have Safety Steering Teams lead by senior management with participation down to the employee level.  They monitor safety performance in the organization and champion safety improvement initiatives. We measure safety culture through safety maturity path self-assessments.  Using the results, business units develop safety improvement plans to further enhance safety in their organizations. We focus on improving contractor safety.  We have engaged senior Duke Energy management with the leadership of our major contractors to improve their performance. An EHS Audit program that measure compliance with regulations in each business unit. Culture where every meeting begins with a Safety Moment where someone discusses a relevant safety topic. This includes executive meetings.
