What is implant? • Brain Implants, also called neural implants, are means of connecting brains with computers, or with other brains, often using nanotechnology • The implants…contain an electrode that picks up impulses from the nerve endings. Before they are implanted, the cones are coated with chemicals — taken from tissue inside the patients’ own knees — to encourage nerve growth.
Test stage • Cyberkinetics Inc. of Foxboro, Mass., has received Food and Drug Administration approval [in 2004] to begin a clinical trial in which four-square-millimeter chips will be placed beneath the skulls of paralyzed patients48 that would enable [them] to control computers directly with their brains or possibly help them move their limbs
New experimental technology • A new moisture-proof sensor has been developed, to monitor cerebral pressure that can lead to dementia. It was created by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT in St. Ingbert in Germany.
One step closer • Pittsburgh lab aims to develop brain implants that can control all sorts of gadgets directly via brain waves by 2020. • The scientists anticipate that consumers will adapt quickly to the idea, and indeed crave the freedom of not requiring a keyboard, mouse, or remote control for surfing the Web or changing channels.
Applications • Toyota recently demoed a wheelchair controlled with brainwaves, and University of Utah researchers have created a wireless brain transmitter that allows monkeys to control robotic arms.
COMPUTER CHIP TREAT PARKINSON’S • DBS( deep brain stimulation) delivers electrical stimulation to select areas of the brain via electrodes; for individuals with Parkinson’s, chronic pain, or dystonia, these induced stimulations can significantly alleviate symptoms
Problems • The size of electrodes limits the precision with which signals can be recorded and delivered. • The actual chip size is also an issue of concern; researchers hope that someday the chip could be etched onto the electrodes themselves • Ethical and morals issues rise
Endless possibilities? • The possibilities are endless. • Implantable microchips that can “talk” directly to the brain would give a tyrannical government the ultimate form of control. • If you could download thoughts and feelings directly into the brains of your citizens, you could achieve total control and never have to worry that they would turn on you. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOSUKnnLXQg
