EPE: System Goals • EPE will construct an integrated suite of software tools and a web portal that enable scientists and educators to enhance undergraduate education (primary) and engage the general public (secondary) using real-time OOI data. Specifically the EPE will provide: • aweb portal enabling virtual collaboration and sharing of materials, • enhanced software for the creation of concept maps that translate science concepts into education material, • integration of a suite of educational data visualization tools, • and step by step guidance on the best practices for developing educational labs & lessons with a real-time data. 1
EPE System Architecture • Three primary tools, accessible through a single website, and sharable through a resource database: Lab Lesson Builder Single Integrated Web-based Portal OOI Data External Data Resource Database Visualization Concept Maps 2
Integrated Web Portal Common user interface User profiles User support via help documentation and email Webinars/training 3
Educational Visualization Service Building flexible and customizable visualization tools Focused initially on time series and profiles Goal is to balance capability and ease of use Multiple entry points (teacher, student, developer) 4
Concept Mapper • Concept Map Builder (create & edit) and Viewer • Concept &linking phrase suggestions (ontologies) • Embedded content resources such as descriptions, data visualizations, photos & videos from OOI & outside resources 5
Lab/Lesson Builder • Community library of lessons • Online lesson template • Lesson Builder Wizard (step by step design process) • EPE resource integration
Educational Resource Database Supports content storage for Tools Collects user supplied content (i.e. images, videos, documents) Index of user generated EPE resources including education-ready OOI visualizations 7
User Community Testing, Workshops & Feedback 10 Sessions, ~268 people. Summarized in a Google Doc that tracks the comment, OOI requirement, Jira bug #, planned action, and why/why not we will take action. 8
EPE Upcoming Software Testing • Website usability testing today with 11 professors • EPE Demonstration Test 1 with the Community College UndergraduateResearch Initiative* • Jan. 18-19, 2014:Demonstration workshop at Rutgers • Spring 2014: Lesson development and testing in community college classrooms • May 2014: Feedback workshop at Rutgers to learn about their experience and lessons developed. * Additional support for CCURI testing provided by NSF REU 9
OOI-wide Ontology • Searchable sites, moorings, platforms, instruments and data products within interactive concept maps

OOI-wide Ontology • Searchable sites, moorings, platforms, instruments and data products within interactive concept maps
2014 Plans We are looking for Irminger scientists working with undergraduates to volunteer as EPE early adopters! During 2014 advanced features/tools will be iteratively added including the OOI-wide ontology database Demonstration 2, Fall 2014: Determine how the existing tools could be augmented to serve informal education audiences. Likely attendees include The Exploratorium (San Francisco), New Hampshire Sea Coast Center and Carrie McDougall (NOAA).
