July 25th August 1st , 8th, 15th, 26th & September 5th Culminating in a performance at Richmond Park ‘‘Links Festival’’ on 16th September Venue : Stradbroke Community Centre Time 10am – 4pm ( Bring Packed Lunch and Drinks ) For further details contact Helen : 07973837664 Fran : 07427460231 Email : frantabulous@live.co.uk JUBILEE PROJECT Students from City School took part in a 6 week Jubilee project.  They worked with older residents from the Salvation Army and learnt about the Queen’s original coronation and what life was like in the 1950's.  The party took place on 25th May 2pm - 4pm.  It was a 1950’s themed party with students from City Secondary and Stradbroke Primary taking part.  There was food, singing dancing and music.  The local TACAs and community groups/councillors were also invited.

Derrick Allsopp–“Wheels over Normandy” Derrick Allsopp met with pupils at City School as he launched his wartime memoirs 'Wheels over Normandy’ HISTORY lessons are so much better when taught by someone who can say, ‘I was there’ and that’s what happened when former soldier Derrick Allsopp spent a day at City School, Sheffield. The 90-year-old shared memories from his new book, Wheels Over Normandy, as part of a World War Two Studies Day. It recounts his five years in the Army when he served as a member of the Buffs – the Royal East Kent Regiment – and how he went on to become a motorbike despatch rider zooming around France following the Normandy landings. The launch was followed by a question-and-answer session. He spoke to the pupils as he described his part in the war. A plumber in civilian life, he still recalls the day he joined up – January 8, 1942. Clearer still are his memories of the day he landed on Gold Beach ‘with a sten gun around his neck, a crash helmet, and a box for his maps’. “I have many memories but I never really spoke about them,” he said. “Then my friend and neighbour Major Rich Taylor persuaded me to write them down. “I’ve had a lot of help especially from the East Community Assembly and City School and I’m pleased to say the book is selling really well.” Wheels Over Normandy, priced • £5.50, can be purchased at City School, 0114 2392571. 4. Neighbourhood watch In the late 80’s and early 90’s our area was part of a neighbourhood watch scheme. It proved invaluable in helping to make our area a safer place for all of us. Unfortunately as people became older and also moved away the scheme dissolved. Now more than ever our neighbourhood would benefit from a neighbourhood watch scheme What can Neighbourhood Watch schemes do? They can target local crime problems and take action to prevent them. In consultation with the local police they can find out from local people what crimes most concern and affect them and focus on those specific problems. Most crime is opportunist, committed on the spur of the moment, or when a car or house is left unlocked. This means there is enormous scope for reducing chances for criminals. Traditional Neighbourhood Watch activity has focused on the immediate vicinity of homes. However, more and more schemes are now broadening their range of work. Local problems such as combating anti-social behaviour, vandalism and graffiti are well within the scope of a well-organised neighbourhood watch scheme. You can also take action such as fitting more secure door and window locks in vulnerable homes. You could also lobby the local authority, for example, to improve street lighting or step up the security of a communal entrance. If you would like to know more or attend the initial meeting please contact Helen 07973837664 The importance of phoning 101 101 is the number to call when you want to contact South Yorkshire Police for non-emergency matters – when it is less urgent than 999. 101 should be called to report less urgent crime or disorder and for general police enquiries. For example: • if your car has been stolen• if your property has been damaged• when you suspect drug use or drug dealing• to report a minor traffic collision• to make us aware of policing issues in your area• for any other general enquiries. It is important to ring 101 as every phone call builds up a case and may lead to police intervention or prosecution, though the 999 number should always be used in absolute emergency's.

5. The Woodthorpe Development Trust Community Hub opened its doors today for the first time at an official event where the ribbon was cut by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor John Campbell. The "shop" on Richmond Road in Sheffield will give the Trust a presence in the heart of the community. Larry Angel M.B.E Chair of the Trust said " We've wanted to open up a venue like this for years so that we can be directly accessed by people that need our help or advice in our community, now we have and we're going to be open for business"! The "hub" will host a variety of services including a special needs "drop in" centre for older teenagers and young adults, project based work,community • learning and advice. Other organisations and groups working in • Woodthorpe and the Ward area will also be able to use the space to • hold surgeries or advice sessions too Dog Rescue We need unwanted blankets, towels, dog & cat food, large or small toys and any unwanted items, you name it, and we will appreciate it!
