  3. Hyperbole • An extreme exaggeration • His feet were bigger than Shaq’s!

  4. Onomatopoeia • Words that imitate sounds • Bang! Wham!

  5. Metaphor • A comparison that makes two unlike things seem alike • Johnny’s plan was a recipe for disaster.

  6. Personification • Gives a nonhuman object the characteristics of a person • The computer laughed as it lost all my work.

  7. Simile • A comparison that uses the words “like” or “as” • The girl was as scared as a turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

  8. Alliteration • The repetition of beginning sounds • Mickey Mouse might like mushrooms.

  9. Symbolism • The use of symbols to convey a meaning beyond what is actually said • A storm occurs during the part of a story where a character is having a fight, symbolizing the conflict.
