  2. Qu’ran/Koran 5 Pillars of Faith • Faith- there is no god but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet • Pray 5 times a day facing the Holy city of Mecca and the Kabba • Giving alms to the poor- charity • Fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan • Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a life time

  3. Vocabulary • Shari’ah- code of laws based on the Koran that regulates everything including trade. • Camp David Accords- agreement which Egypt recognizes Israel as a nation. • Caliph- highest political and religious leader in Islamic government.

  4. Three types of Muslims • Shi’a- branch of Islamic members who believe the first four caliphs are rightful successors of Muhammad • Shiites- a member of the branch of Islam that regards Ali as the legitimate successor to Mohammed and rejects the first three caliphs. • Sunni- branch of Islamic members that believes Ali and his decedents are rightful successors of Muhammad.

  5. War on Terrorism • Terrorism was created to raise awareness of demands • Ex: Attacked twin towers = U.S. soldiers occupying Afghanistan • Increased demand in oil • Extremist want their demands met. • towers in U.S…. Why?

USA Patriot Act • Allows investigators to use the tools that were already available to investigate organized crime and drug trafficking. • Allows law enforcement to use surveillance against crimes of terror • Allows federal agents to follow sophisticated terrorists trained to evade detection • Allows law enforcement to conduct investigations without tipping off terrorists • Allows federal agents to ask a court for an order to obtain business records in National Security Terrorism cases. • Allows law enforcement officials to obtain a search warrant anywhere a terrorist related activity occurred. • Allows victims of computer hacking to request law enforcement assistance in monitoring the trespassers on their computers. • Prohibits the harboring of terrorists • Enhanced a number of conspiracy penalties • Enhanced the inadequate maximum penalties for various crimes likely to be committed by terrorists.
