  3. House Layout

  4. Location Information • Location: Buffalo, NY • Latitude: 42.92oN (25o in Dubai) • Longitude: 78.72oW • Winter Design Weather Data: • Outside Design Temperature: -16.5oC • Wind Speed: 16.5m/s • Summer Design Weather Data: • Max Dry Bulb Temperature: 30.1oC • Coincident Wet-Bulb Temperature: • 21.5oC • Min Dry-Bulb Temperature: 20.6oC

  5. Materials: • External Walls: (outside to inside) • Brickwork (Inner Leaf) – 10cm • XPS Extruded Polystyrene – 7cm • Wood Blocks – 10cm • Glass Wool – 5cm • Gypsum Plaster – 1.3cm • Roof: • Asphalt Tiles – 2.5cm • Air Gap – 1cm • Roofing Felt – 0.5cm • Glass Wool – 8cm • Internal Partitions: • Gypsum Plaster – 5cm • Air Gap – 10cm • Gypsum Plaster – 5cm • Ground Floor: • Oak (Radial) – 3cm • Glass Wool – 7cm • Wood Blocks– 10cm • Cast Concrete – 10cm • External Windows: • Double Paned – 10% glazed • Sunroom Window: • Quadruple Paned – 20% glazed • External Door: • Steel – 4cm • Internal Door: • Pine – 3.5cm

  6. Heating/Cooling Systems • Split Central A/C Unit • The outdoor cabinet (shown below) contains the condenser and compressor. An indoor cabinet contains the evaporator. • The indoor cabinet also contains a furnace. • Heating: • Fuel: Natural Gas • Heating System COP: 0.8 • Cooling: • Fuel: Electricity from grid • Cooling System COP: 1.6

  7. Heating and Cooling Loads • Overall, I took data for 6 different scenarios • 4 House Orientations (Sunroom facing North, South, East, and West) • Looking for best and worst case scenarios • 2 House Relocations (Hot and Frigid Climates) • Compare Buffalo, NY to extremely hot and extremely cold climates

  8. Heating and Cooling Loads • Orientation 1: West • Heating Results: • Design Capacity: 24.87kW • Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: • Family Room: 4.03kW (16%) • Den + Game Room: 3.67kW (15%) • Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%) • Cooling Results: • Design Capacity: 10.11kW • Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: • Sunroom: 3.47kW (34%) • Kitchen: 1.88kW (19%) • Family Room: 1.34kW (13%)

  9. Orientation 1 Temperature and Heat Gain

  10. Heating/Cooling Loads (Continued) • Orientation 2: North • Heating Results: • Design Capacity: 24.82kW • Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: • Family Room: 4.03kW (16%) • Den + Game Room: 3.66kW (15%) • Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%) • Sunroom: 2.18kW (9%) – Same energy req. when large sunroom window faces N or S. • Cooling Results: • Design Capacity: 7.84kW • Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: • Kitchen: 1.56kW (20%) • Sunroom: 1.34kW (17%) • Family Room: 1.14kW (15%) • Lower than other orientations since large sunroom window faces north. This means that the window sees no sun, and does not absorb any heat.

  11. Heating/Cooling Loads (Continued) • Orientation 3: 180 degrees (East) • Heating Results: • Design Capacity: 24.87kW • Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: • Family Room: 4.04kW (16%) • Den and Game Room: 3.67kW (15%) • Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%) • Cooling Results: • Design Capacity: 9.29kW • Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: • Sunroom: 2.95kW (32%) • Kitchen: 1.49kW (16%) • Den and Game Room: 1.17kW (13%)

  12. Heating/Cooling Loads (Continued) • Orientation 4: South • Heating Results: • Design Capacity: 24.83kW • Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: • Family Room: 4.00kW (16%) • Den and Game Room: 3.67kW (15%) • Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%) • Sunroom: 2.18kW (9%) – Do not save any energy with this large south facing window when compared to orientation 2 (90 degrees). • Cooling Results: • Design Capacity: 10.52kW • 3kW higher that north orient • Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: • Sunroom: 3.04kW (29%) – faces sun at all times – over 200% higher than when sunroom faces north • Kitchen: 1.71kW (16%) • Master Bedroom: 1.69kW (16%)

  13. Results • Best Case: • Heating: • Very little fluctuation when rotating house. Maximum heating load change of 0.04kW. • Cooling: • Minimum cooling load when sunroom faces north (receives no sunlight). • Overall, the best case scenario of my house would be with the sunroom facing north (but then it wouldn’t be much of a sunroom!). • Heating Load: 24.82kW • Cooling Load: 7.84kW • Worst Case: • Heating: • Very little fluctuation when rotating house. Maximum heating load change of 0.04kW. • Cooling: • Maximum cooling load when sunroom faces south (constantly faces sun). • Overall, the worst case scenario of my house would be with the sunroom facing south. • Heating Load: 24.83kW • Cooling Load: 10.52kW

  14. Relocation 1 • Dubai, UAE • Latitude: 25.25oN • Longitude: 55.33oE • Winter Weather Data: • -Outside Design Temp: 12.3oC • Summer Weather Data: • -Max Dry Bulb Temp: 42.4oC • -Coincident Wet-Bulb Temp: 24.1oC • -Min Dry-Bulb Temp: 32.6oC

  15. Relocation 1 • Heating Results: • Design Capacity: 5.22kW (475% reduction from Buffalo, NY) • Heating load likely due to temperature drop at night • Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: • Family Room: 1.11kW (21%) • Den + Game Room: 0.84kW (19%) • Kitchen: 0.54kW (10%) • Cooling Results: • Design Capacity: 24.38kW (240% increase from same orientation in Buffalo, NY) • Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: • Master Bedroom: 3.8kW (16%) • Kitchen: 3.37kW (14%) • Sunroom: 2.83kW (12%) – faces sun at all times

  16. Relocation 2 • Dikson Island, Russia • Latitude: 73.53oN • Longitude: 80.40oE • Winter Weather Data: • -Outside Design Temp: -38.9oC • Summer Weather Data: • -Max Dry Bulb Temp: 15.4oC • -Coincident Wet-Bulb Temp: 12.5oC • -Min Dry-Bulb Temp: 12oC

  17. Relocation 2 • Heating Results: • Design Capacity: 50.29kW (200% increase from Buffalo, NY – 1000% increase from Dubai) • Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: • Family Room: 7.79kW (15.5%) • Den + Game Room: 7.06kW (14%) • Kitchen: 6.56kW (13%) • Cooling Results: • Design Capacity: 3.65kW (290% reduction from same orientation in Buffalo, NY – 670% reduction from Dubai) • Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: • Sunroom: 2.84kW (78%) – faces sun at all times • Laundry Room: 0.45kW (12%) – laundry equipment heats up room • Kitchen: 0.36kW (10%)
