  1. Course onStatistical and epidemiological issues in human biomonitoring studies: An hCOMET course A joint hCOMET - UK MEG initiative IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana, Rome, Italy,28 February - 2 March 2018

  2. The Course is intended for younger and senior researchers with scientific interests in the field of human biomonitoring. The training course will be a combination of theoretical (interactive Frontal Learning) and practical knowledge (hands-on training) and will cover most critical topics concerning the design, organization and statistical analysis of data from human studies with biomarkers. Director: Stefano BONASSI, Italy Faculties: Mirta MILIĆ, Croatia Sabine LANGIE, Belgium Patrizia RUSSO, Italy Roger GODSHALK, Netherlands Monica NERI, Italy Carlo TOMINO, Italy

  3. Wednesday 28th February 2018 9.00-9.30 Welcome to participants, Presentation of faculties, Course organization, Course overview (All faculties) 9.30-10.00 Why do we need epidemiology and statistcs in human studies with biomarkers? (Stefano BONASSI) 10.00-11.00 Choice of the best biomarker from the best tissue ! (biological and mechanisticissues) (Sabine LANGIE) 11.00-11.15 Coffee Break 11.15-12.15 Traditional and innovative 'smart' study designs in molecular epidemiology. Introduction to the concept of bias, confounding and interaction. (Stefano BONASSI) 12.15-13.15 Literature review and Reporting in molecular epidemiology (Strobe and Strobe-ME statements) (Valia NIKOLOVA e Stefano BONASSI) LUNCH 14.30-15.30 Why assessing exposure and choosing the best biospecimen for biomarker measurement is so critical ! (Roger GODSHALK) 15.30-17.00 Every biomonitoring study deserves a protocol!! Epidemiological and statistical issues (Inclusion/exclusion criteria, observational or intervention studies, choice of controls, etc.) (Monica NERI) Practical issues (specimen collection and storage, timing, operators training).(Stefano BONASSI and Mirta MILIĆ) 16.30-17.30 Questionnaire planning, validation, alfa cronbach, quali-quantitative variables.(Stefano BONASSI)

  4. Thursday 1st March 2018 9.00-10.00 Describing data (types of data, data visualization, descriptive statistics, concept of sample and population) (Stefano Bonassi) 10.00-11.00 Statistical inference (probability, probability distributions, sampling theory, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, pitfalls of p-values) (Stefano Bonassi) 11.00-11.15 Coffee Break 11.15-12.15 Statistical testing (parametric and non-parametric tests) univariate analysis, mulitple regression analysis, survival analysis; how to choose the right statistical approach) (Stefano BONASSI) 12.15-13.15 Statistical analysis of the alkaline comet assay data for DNA damage assessment, also with the use of enzymes for evaluating specific DNA damage (e.g. ENDO III, hOGG1, FPG) and the assessement of DNA repair (Stefano BONASSI and Sabine LANGIE) LUNCH 14.30-15.30 Statistical packages most often used for data management and statistical analysis of biomedical data (Hands on session with stefano Bonassi) 15.30-16.30 from bench to bedside: making the right questions getting the right answers !! (Carlo TOMINO) 16.30-17.30 Ethical issues in human studies with biomarkers/ethical issues (consensus, privacy, risk comunication) (Stefano Bonassi)

  5. Friday2nd March 2018 Planning and organizing a molecular epidemiology study in a population (possibly) exposed to genotoxic agents. 9.00-9.30 Presentation of the exercise, Detailed description of the setting chosen for the exercise, division of participants in three groups. (Stefano BONASSI) 9.30-10.15 Introduction by Mirta MILIĆ (5 min): What kind of biomarker should be measured (exposure, EBE, susceptibility) ? which biomarker(s) is/are the most suitable option ? What are the important practical issues ? (work in groups) 10.15-11.00 Introduction by Roger GODSHALK (5 min.)Is the study population really exposed ? How should be measured exposure ? Is a questionnaire needed ? (work in groups) 11.00-11.15 Coffee Break 11.15-12.15 Introduction by Stefano BONASSI (5 min.) Study design, Selection of the study population and controls, etical issues, inclusion/exclusion criteria(work in groups) 12.15-13.15 Introduction by Stefano BONASSI (5 Min.) Calculation of the sample size, choice of statistical approach (Statistical Plan), treatment of multiple comparison (work in groups) LUNCH 14.30-15.30 Introduction by Stefano BONASSI (5 min.) Hands on Statistical Analysis of a sham dataset(work in group) 15.30-16.30 Presentation of protocols from the three groups (10 min each group). (General discussion with all faculties) 17.00 Closing
