Goals and Objectives To prepare students to be productive, participating members of society. I will focus on implementing a curriculum that is relevant and meaningful to students, while helping them achieve and meet the 7th grade Common Core standards in both English and History.
The 4 C’s of Common Core • Critical Thinking & Analysis -looking at problems in a new way; linking learning across subjects & disciplines • Collaboration -working w/ others towards a common goal • Communication -sharing thoughts, ideas, & solutions • Creativity & Innovation -trying new approaches to get things done
Textbooks • Each student has been issued the Medieval History Alive Textbook and its accompanying workbook (this text and its workbook are the only school books they will need daily on a consistent basis) • - The Language of Literature book (This stays at school and will not be issued out to students.) • - Language Network - Novels will also be checked out to students over the course of the year as they are assigned.
Suggested Class Materials • 1 ½ - 2” 3 Ring Binder: This is needed for English and History but can include the same binder the student uses for other classes and subjects. This binder must have section dividers for both English and History. • Paper: Loose-leaf, college ruled paper. • Pens/Pencils/Highlighters/Pencil Case: Must have numerous useful writing utensils ready for class. • Colored Pencils (w/sharpeners)/Markers • Daily Sinaloa Planner (This should be with students at all times

English Overview - Readings from The Language of Literature Textbook: Fiction, Non-fiction, Biographies, Autobiographies, Poetry, Essays • Novels: Catherine Called Birdy,The Outsiders • Research Report: Students will write a research report based on a subject that they feel has made an impact on medieval history. This report will be part of their English and History grade and will involve the following: 1) 5 paragraph essay 2) List of works cited 3) Oral Presentation 4) 3D architectural design

History Overview • We will be studying the Medieval World during the middle ages, which includes: • The Legacy of the Roman Empire • Feudalism & the Catholic Church • Muslim Civilization & Islam • West Africa • Imperial China • Japan & the Samurai • Mayans, Aztecs, & Incas • Renaissance and Reformation • The Age of Exploration, The Scientific Revolution, & the Enlightenment
Grading Grades will be recorded and available for parent and student viewing on Aeries. Late Work • Late work will be accepted for excused absences, and will be given full credit as long as it is done correctly and turned in within a reasonable amount of time (1 excused day per day of absence). -Other late work will be given reduced credit
Homework • Homework should be expected 4-5 times per week • Students should be copying information down from the homework board daily • It is expected that students will read an AR book of their choice at least 30 minutes a night to supplement homework. Each month students will need to take and pass an AR test with a 7/10 or better. This is a part of their English grade. • I will keep parents up to date on Homework and Events through my website at www.mrbanaag.weebly.com
Tests and Quizzes - I provide advanced notice and adequate time to study for tests and quizzes. Study guides will be handed out in class and can be found on my website. - If a student is absent for a test/quiz it is his/her responsibility to arrange for a makeup test(usually in tutorial or at lunch). • In addition to regularly scheduled tests, all 7th graders will prepare for the state-wide 7th Grade Writing Test - The 7th grade English/ History department will be administering 3 common assessment essays for English and 3 History common assessment tests
Behavior Guidelines Class Rules (PREP): - Be PREPARED = Always come to class prepared with books, writing utensils, paper, homework and other assigned work. - Be RESPECTFUL = Students are expected to treat one another with care and kindness. - Be ENGAGED = SLANT (Sit up, Listen, Ask/Answer Questions, Nod, Track) - Be PROFESSIONAL= Dress and act in accordance with school policies. As part of the Sinaloa policy,tardiness will result in a detention. Tardy is not being in your seat with your supplies out. Discipline Policy: - Verbal Warning - Natural Consequence - Lunch/After School Detention • Lunch/After School Detention w/ parent call • Discipline Referral
