ATLAB – Technology Exchange Platform for Industrial Partners Heinz Pernegger, Marzio Nessi, Markus Nordberg CERN/PH TALENT Kick-Off Meeting, January 16, 2012
What is ATLAB? • ATLAS Technology Lab (ATLAB) is a Platform or Interface to facilitate open innovation between ATLAS and external industrial partners related to ATLAS’ R&D-Upgrade activities • It is about technology exchange - rather than technology transfer - related to early phase R&D of ATLAS Upgrades, with up to a 10-year time horizon • ATLAB works through separate, complementary funding, such as EU, and facilitates across the different projects, based on the expressed interest of the external partners • ATLAB tries to help its external partners in identifying together new technology opportunities • As ATLAS (ATLAB) is not a legal entity, it is represented by CERN • There is no entry fee to join ATLAB
Mission of ATLAB ATLAB Mission: Offer a platform to channel complementary resources for HL-LHC related ATLAS R&D and technology development; Provide an appropriate entry point for external partners to access, contribute to and adapt ATLAS technologies for future use ATLAB Services: Technology Development: prototyping of (future) ATLAS technologies with external partners having in mind possible new areas of use and addressing our technological needs Impact analysis: assisting partners in the development and evaluation of possible usage plans Promotion: commonshowroom & events for technology developments carried out in ATLAS institutions
ATLAB Organization Technology Development • Provides technology advise and adaptation to partner • Develops application prototypes together with partner • Composed of ATLAS (and possibly CERN) technology experts Adaptation Planning • Assistance in developing plans for external applications (product, scientific instrument) adaptation outside HEP, in collaboration with selected Business Schools or Economics Departments Administration • Coordination of partner linkages to partners (eg. EU-funded initiatives) • Controlling and financial management of selected projects • ATLAB Infrastructure management (showroom and laboratory supervision) • Provides access to site and administrative support to partners • Interfacing with CERN (Legal issues, agreements, finance services)
ATLAB Methodology Technical Analysis and Solutions Partner’s needs Novel design Specification Prototype or Feasibility Study Adaptation/Business Analysis and Solutions Capacity/Demand/Share Industry leaders Commercialization Finance/Licensing Project timeline 1 to 3 years
Benefits and Solutions for External Partners • Cost efficiencies in shared R&D to lower threshold for external partners (SME) • Access to established world-wide network of experts (3000 people in 174 universities in 38 countries!) • Gaining from ATLAS as experienced partner in management and controlling of complex development projects • Gaining access to related high-tech markets • Exchange of knowledge and training of partner’s staff with world-leading technology experts • Technology advantages: • Access to CERN/ATLAS infrastructure and technologies • Interface to international top level research • Fast access to expert network • Image gain through cooperation with CERN/ATLAS
Promotion of ATLAS & Partners ATLAS Showroom • “See & Touch” ATLAS • Display of ATLAS Technologies ATLAS Application Conference • Organize bi-annual meetings to promote ATLAS and Partner contacts • Presentation and Exposition of current research projects and technology developments by Partners and ATLAS Institutes ATLAS Application Network • Create Network of Knowhow on ATLAS Technologies and Applications, using e.g. the ATLAS Application database as the platform (see Claudio’s talk)
ATLAB Infrastructure • One of the main attractions of ATLAB is the possibility for the Partners to have access to CERN’s world-class infrastructure • Laboratory for development • Work with partner’s experts • Hands-on training and knowledge transfer • Access to experts’ network • This provides ATLAS with an opportunity to show-case its developments and achievements Dedicated Infrastructure ( in Bat 180? ): • Showroom • 4 offices • 2 laboratories • 1 meeting room
ATLAB Summary • ATLAB is a platform for technology exchange for exploring and testing future technologies, related to ATLAS Upgrade-R&D efforts • Provide a flexible and open innovation framework to execute technology projects with external partners • Provide means to channel complementary resources to ATLAS related R&D and to help external partners in assessing new technology options and markets • Provide the infrastructure, common workplace and means to showcase our R&D. • Enhance visibility through joint project with national industries and agencies
