Chapter 1 Characteristics of Living Things
“Bio-” means “life” and “-logy” means “the study of.” • Biology=the study of life • One of the most general principles in biology is that living things do not exist in isolation. • Living things interact with their environment and depend upon other living and nonliving things to aid their survival.
The study of one living thing always involves the study of the others with which it interacts. (Ex: when studying tigers, one must also study its prey and its habitat) • Human existence is not possible without the interaction with other organisms—plants and animals supply us with food.
Characteristics of Living Things • Occasionally it is difficult to determine whether something is “alive.” • Sometimes a nonliving thing may have one or two of the life characteristics. 1. Have an orderly structure 2. Produce offspring 3. Grow and develop 4. Adjust to changes in the environment
Living Things are Organized • All living things show an orderly structure, or organization. • Although living things are very diverse, they are unified in having cellular organization. Whether it is made of one cell or billions of cells, all of its parts function together in an organized, living system.
Living Things Make More Living Things • Another characteristic of life is reproduction, the production of offspring. • Reproduction is not necessary for the survival of an individual organism, but it is essential for the continuation of the organism’s species. • A species is a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring in nature.

Living Things Change During Their Lives • An organism’s life begins as a single cell, and over time it grows. • Growth results in an increase in the amount of living material and the formation of new structures. • All of the changes that take place during the life of an organism are known as its development.
Living Things Adapt & Evolve • Any inherited structure, behavior, or internal process that enables an organism to respond to environmental factors and live to produce offspring is called an adaptation. • As the environment changes, some adaptations are more suited to the new conditions than others. Individuals with more suitable adaptations are more likely to survive and reproduce.
The gradual change in a species through adaptations over time is evolution.
