  1. Project Citizen Truman Middle School—Bright Schools = Bright Minds Grand Prairie, Texas

  2. What is the Problem? • Colors on our school walls are not inspiring students to discover their fullest potential.

  3. Alternative Solutions • Existing Policy—Currently, there is not written policy, but all school walls are painted the same cream color.

  4. Alternative Solutions • Alternative #1-paint classroom doors Advantages— It would be a more welcoming appearance for our school. It would be less expensive than painting a whole room. It would involve less labor. Disadvantages— It would be less effective in changing the environment. Teachers would want different colors and you would have the have the doors match.

  6. Alternative Solutions • Alternative #2--Paint the lockers Advantages— Students and Teachers would walk past the lockers every period and see the colors. It would be cheaper to paint the lockers instead of the whole classroom. The lockers are the first thing people notice as they enter the school. Disadvantages— Paint might not stay on the metal because students are constantly using them The color is outside of the classroom, so it would not be as effective.

  8. Alternative Solutions • Alternative #3-Paint an Accent Wall Advantages- Some teachers prefer an accent wall. It would be less expensive than painting all the walls. Disadvantages- It would not be as effective as painting the whole classroom. It might be distracting to the students because all the focus might be going towards the accent wall.

Our Solution-Class Policy We believe that schools should be given the option to paint their classroom walls. • We believe that painting all the classroom walls is the best solution. • Classrooms would be brighter and more welcoming to students. • Certain colors are better for certain subjects in inspiring students to work.

Our Solution-cont’d. • According to research, the use of color enhances memory and retention. • Color has a profound effect on a person’s sense of well-being. • Studies indicate that people living in a monotone environment are more likely to show violent tendencies, so color is a must in schools.

  12. Our Solution cont’d. Advantages to painting all the classroom walls- Students receive the most positive effect. Increases school pride Gives students a feeling of ownership in their school Disadvantages- Costs more to initially paint Costs more to maintain Other schools might be upset

  13. Our Solution cont’d. • Since local school districts are independent in their maintenance of school buildings, we are not effecting any state or federal law. We are not violating any state or federal constitutions. • The school district is the agency that is ultimately responsible for our school.

  14. Implementation of Our Plan • Ask Chamber of Commerce for their expertise in encouraging the community to better our schools • Enlist the help of the PTA • Ask our community sponsor, JohnnyCarino’s for help • Contact newspaper

Implementation of Our Plan • Put message on school marquee • Put posters up in local shops • Use slogans—”Help make our school more inspiring and productive”; “Bright Schools = Bright Minds”; “Help our school be more FUNdamental”; “Have a beautiful heart and make our school more beautiful”. • Raise money thru donations, car washes, and volunteer labor
