The Importance of Government • 1. Keep order and provide security • Laws are how we keep order/provide security • Resolve= laws help to find solutions to conflicts • 2. Provide Services • Protect the country • 3. Guide the community • Public policy-the decisions/actions gov’t takes to solve problems in the community • Enforce laws • 4. Levels of Government • National (highest), State, and Local
Types of Government • 1. Democratic Government:( The people rule) • Direct Democracy-Ancient Greeks-all citizens made decisions • Representative democracy- citizens choose a group of people to represent, make laws, and govern on their behalf • Republics v. Constitutional Monarchy • Constitutional Monarchy- limited monarchy that has a king or queen but also a representative group such as parliament • -Majority Rule- principle that means the majority or more than half have the power to make laws
Types of Government 2. Authoritarian Government • Authoritarian regimes- power is held by a person/group not accountable to the people • Absolute Monarchy= complete control by king/queen • Dictatorship= complete control by leader • Totalitarian Rule- gov’t controls all aspect of people’s lives • Ideology- strict idea about life and society • Socialism- society controls all aspects of the economy

Systems of Government • Federal System- power is divided among central/national gov’t and smaller self-governing political units such as states • Unitary System- the central government is supreme • Confederal System of Gov’t- member states that have agreed to join together voluntarily
