  1. Incremental Modelling of Ambiguous Geometric Ideas (I-MAGI) Sungwoo, Lim CAD centre Supervisor: Dr. Alex H B Duffy Dr. B S Lee

  2. Contents • Sketching in the design process • Definition of Vague Geometric Model (VGM) • The hierarchical area of the research problem • Functions of vague geometric modelling(VGMing) • Overview of prototype system process • Progress of the project • Conclusion

  3. Clarification of the design Conceptual design Embodiment design Detail design Sketching Sketching in the design process • The use of sketching. - fast expression of their early design ideas. - handle a vagueness of ideas for more flexible creativity. • Sketching in the design process. (Pahl and Beitz)

Classification of task Conceptual design Embodiment design Detail design Sketching Geometric modelling Spatial arrangement Design environment support GUI builder by sketching Interface Programming without Coding Basic 3D Direction Analysis 2D Sketching Line tidy Spatial arrangement & analysis 3D Sketching Geometric model reconstruction Retrieval of design elements Location Constraints Retrieval by Partial Elements Vague spatial relationships Sketching recognition Hidden line construction Uncertain Region Retrieval by Image Front-end interface system Geometric model structure analysis Universal Modelling Interface Symbol/diagram recognition 2D/3D shape recognition The hierarchical address of the research problem Vague shape modelling (VSMing)

  5. Definition of Vague Geometric Model (VGM) • Definition of VGM: A geometric model which implicates ill-defined abstraction, numerical value and/or spatial information. • Definition of VGMing: A modelling method that can represent and maintain the vague information contained in a vague geometric model (VGM).

  6. Functions of Vague Geometric Modelling (VGMing) • Representation of vague information - Various likelihoods of line meanings. - Similarly, for shapes, put in a hierarchy. - Customised viewpoints. • Maintenance of vague information - Incremental update. - Modification. - Retrieval by various criteria.

  9. Conclusion • Visualisation of conceptual models, which contains various vague information in the form of sketches, is important to support a more flexible and dynamic design. • Current approaches do not offer any method of representing and managing vague information often found in conceptual ideas. • A possible approach to the vague geometric modelling, based on hierarchical structure and probabilistic method, and its associated issues have been briefly presented. • A prototype with most of the ideas put forward here is under development, and when it is available, a more flexible and realistic evaluation of the idea will be possible.
