INTERPENETRATION OF SOLIDS 2006 HIGHER LEVEL QUESTION 4
Set up plan and elevation as given in question. End view of uncut prism required to determine heights.
Determine projections of square based prism in auxiliary. Where are distances taken from?
Projection lines for cut pentagonal prism. Distances taken from X,Y line to plan.
Locating corner 4: project from c, through 4 to locate point on DD line.
Join up to point C, where this construction line intersects the edge 4, locates the point where 4 penetrates the pentagonal prism.
Locating point b: where b is located on the edge C,D we project up to elevation to cut corresponding line. This gives us the point on the corner in elevation.
To locate c in plan, drop vertically from elevation, take distance from auxiliary as shown and apply in plan.
Take line from D, through 3 to enable its location in elevation. Same method as for point 4 at start.
Where edge 1 meets the cut surface of the pentagonal prism is its point in elevation. Drop to corresponding line in plan to determine location.
Start same process again to locate where prism protrudes from back of pentagonal prism. Take particular care to where object turns corners on reverse of solid.
Points on ground at end of square based prism. Ensure to project from where they cut Ensure to project from where they cut X,Y in elevation.
