Welcome to Glanffrwd Infants School. This is a photo of our school. The school is in Ynysybwl. Our school is 25 years old. Glanffrwd Infants school used to be in the Old Bwl. It was over a hundred year's old. But now it has been knoct down. We wanted to know about school days in the past.
We went on a school trip to YsgolMaestir in Saint Fagons to find out about school day's in the past. Miss Evans was a strict techer and she wore a long scrt and a cape. The children had to wok in a srait line the teacher always said "Children should be seen but not heared!“ If the children slouched they had to ware the posture bord. If they spoak welsh they had toware the welsh not. If they were norty they wood have the cane. We lurnt lots about the past.
In our role play we desidide we wood make it into the oldun days school. Year 1 and 2 made a mind map of ideas. We wanted a teacher and children desk. We coleckted a pointer and a cane from Miss Wotely. We went on a history hunt and found oldun days school clothes. We have a lot of fun acting inour role play and we like filming each other with the flip camera.
We went on a history hunt. We seen bricks in a wall that were from Lady Windsor collery. We saw old blackand white Victorian tiles infront of somebodys front door. We sent an email to Trerobet School to see if it was ok to visit the School and see their old fire place. Then we went down Trerobet School to see the old firepalace. He showd us the kettle. He showed pot that they cooked with and the hook to hold the pot above that fire.
We wrote a letter to Miss Valentine and Mrs Rees to come to our school to talk to us about the old Glanffrwd school. Mrs Rees was the head teacher in the old Glanffrwd school. Miss Valentine was the head teacher of our school when it first opened. They talked about when the mams had to wait outside the school on the road to pick the children up. There was no path for them to wait on and they werent allowed in the school to wait for the children. They told us that there were mushrooms in the toilets because they were cold and damp. The toilets were at the top of the yard. The children had to go to the top of the yard just to go to the toilet.
We wrote a letter to Mr and Mrs Grant to come to our School to talk to us about the past. Mr Grant spoke to us about the war and showed us all his medals. Mrs Grant spoke to us about when she was in the old Glanffrwd school she showed us lots of pictures of the school. Mrs Grant talked to us about when she was in school and showed us lots of pictures.
We wrote a letter to the residential flats to ask if we could visit them to ask them questions about Ynysbwl in the past. There was 3 woman and 1 man there for us to ask questions. The man told us about when they used to make their own toys and games. They played with paddy and doggies, bowleys that were made in the pit. One of the ladies talked to us about how they made their own carpets from bits of material that they used to sew together. They didn't have swimming pools they used to bathe in the river were they used to learn how to swim. The lady told us how she was pushed into the river and told you either swim or drowned. They learned to swim in the river. They used to share bathers if they were boys or girls. We made decorations with the residents up the flats.
As part of our research we visited the Heritage Park we learnt about grandmas washday. The following pictures show the man using the kettle that is used to warm the water to wash the clothes. Ross putting in the water from the boiling kettle. We had to use a cloth to hold the kettle because it gets very hot. Malachy using the tongs to get the pants out of the wash tin. He put then into a bucket with clean water in to get the soap out. Josh using the posstick to get all the soap out of the pants. Megan putting the bucket under the mangle to catch all the water that will come out of the pants and Rylee using the mangle to get all the water out of the pants this is done a few times to get as much water out as possible. Finally the pants are put on the line to dry.
