STRATEGIES Planning • Minister’s PME Targets – increase enrolment and success (graduates) by 2014 – Consultative discussions with each university; Ministerial Targets set for each institution • Improving quality and throughput by addressing infrastructure (buildings, equipment and technology) and human resource needs (academic staffing) • Addressing the need for support for students (preparedness of students)

Planning (cntd) • Infrastructure and efficiency funding for engineering in universities, universities of technology and comprehensive universities • Infrastructure and efficiency funding for Life and Physical sciences on undergraduate level as well as postgraduate level (Masters and Doctoral) • Earmarked funding for specific areas – Teaching development and Foundation provisioning • Strategic partnerships: meetings with Deans, Professional Bodies, DST, Industry, SETAs • Expansion of the system – new universities R 50m 2011
