Female Gonads. Samantha Hentosh Whitney Maxfield January 2014 – 7 th period. Location. The ovaries are located in the pelvic region of the body. There are two female ovaries, one on either side of the body. They are connected to the uterus by the fallopian tubes.

  1. Female Gonads Samantha Hentosh Whitney Maxfield January 2014 – 7th period

  2. Location • The ovaries are located in the pelvic region of the body. • There are two female ovaries, one on either side of the body. • They are connected to the uterus by the fallopian tubes.

  3. Hormones and Gland Procedure • The gonads produce progesterone. • This is important during pregnancy • The gonads produce estrogen in females. • This is very important in puberty • The gonads produce sex hormones. • Inhibin: • Suppresses production of other hormones • Relaxins: • Are only found in pregnant females • Relaxes muscles to make giving birth easier

  4. Hormones and Homeostasis • Hormones help maintain homeostasis. In particular the female gonads help maintain our bodies stability and growth with the secretion of estrogen. • Estrogen is helpful with blood flow and cholesterol as well.

  5. Feedback and Antagonistic Hormones • Negative feedback mechanism controlled by the female gonads would be melatonin. • Positive feedback mechanism of the female gonads would be when the ovaries secrete Oxytocin during birth. • The oxytocin calms the body and the muscles making giving birth easier.

  6. Lack/Excess of Hormones • Excess of hormones (estrogen) can cause a women to develop the inability to become pregnant. • A lack of hormones can be very harmful to the body. • Heavy menstrual bleeding can occur • Having too little estrogen will cause problems with absorption of vitamins.

  7. Problems and Treatment • In ovarian cancer is developed the patient will have to endure the following steps: • Removal • Chemotherapy • Radiation
