Presentation Overview • Overview - UH Environment • Project Team Lifecycle • Lessons Learned
UH Environment Overview The University of Houston System includes: • UH Main Campus • UH-Downtown • UH-Clear Lake • UH-Victoria • UH-Fort Bend Plus, 4 off-campus learning institutes: West Houston Institute at Cinco Ranch, the North Houston Institutes, UH System at Fort Bend, and the University Center (The Woodlands)
UH Environment Overview • 14 Colleges • 8 Administrative Divisions • 32,000 Students • 4,000 Faculty & Staff The UH Main Campus includes:
UH Computing Environment Overview • Network Infrastructure • Windows Domain Infrastructure
Network Infrastructure: Current environment Network design • consists of a flat, bridged configuration currently undergoing conversion to a routed, sub-netted configuration DNS • Currently handled by 3 Unix\Linux machines • Structure includes DNS resolution for some of the other UH campuses DHCP • Currently handled by 2 Linux machines • Available for campus-wide use • Utilizes two non-overlapping scopes for address assignment
Characteristics Current Domain Structure • Multiple domains with one or more administrators • No way to sub-divide domain management • Multiple trust relationships without uniformity…increased opportunity for problems • IT responsibilities encompass both Academic and Administrative domains, but not campus-inclusive
Project Team Lifecycle • Internal IT Focus: Formation of IT Windows 2000 Project Team • Team Focus: Desktop Issues • Team Focus: Infrastructure Issues • Team Split Focus: Desktop vs. Infrastructure • External IT Focus: Relating to the Campus Community
