General PreAP info • In 6th grade PreAP is Honors. • The students focus more intensely on writing and problems solving in both ELA and math • Students should be self motivated (that means it is important to them – and not because their parents tell them it is important) • Students need to be organized • Students do NOT have to be in BOTH ELA and math…they can be in one or the other
6th GradePreAP Pre AP English: • Requires entrance placement with focus on writing • Requires A’s in reading and writing; student may test with ONE B in reading and writing • Requires history of Proficient/Advanced on STAR testing • Upon entrance there is greater focus on writing; if writing is not a student’s strength student may struggle
Math PreAP Math: Grade level mathematics taught with Springboard curriculum for preparation for AP mathematics in high school: more writing and problem solving • Requires 80% on 5th grade placement exam • Requires A’s/B’s in math
Advanced Math • Placement in Advanced Math occurs when a student scores 80% or HIGHER on the district challenge exam – thus reflecting they have already shown advanced knowledge of current grade level standards • Recommendation for placement will be into the next grade level PreAP math class or following series in curriculum • Sutter will only provide a test for exiting the student’s CURRENT math placement
7th and 8th Grade • The sequence continues in 7th and 8th grade for PreAP ELA and math • Students who are PreAP and get A’s/B’s do not need to test into PreAP 7th/8th…they can automatically move forward • Students who want to test into Honors English may take a placement exam • Students who wish to challenge math may challenge the next level in math but MUST complete the challenge with MINIMUM 80%
Math sequence PreAP • PreAP Course I = 6th grade PreAP math • PreAP Course II = 7th grade PreAP math • Integrated Math I = 8th grade math • Integrated Math II = 9th grade math • Each sequence that is being challenged must be met with an 80% or higher to move forward to the next sequence of math. A student who challenges math PreAP math Course II will ONLY move to Integrated math I with 80% or higher
