AIAA New Event Model From: communications@aiaa.org Date: Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 9:11 AM Subject: AIAA New Event Model 27 June 2012 Dear Colleague: Over the past year, AIAA has been assessing our events and discussing how we might better serve our membership and reach a broader cross section of the aerospace community. This effort has been undertaken by the Technical Activities Committee, with feedback from the various technical discipline constituencies and input from other areas of the Institute. Based on the results of this process, in May, the AIAA Board of Directors approved the “AIAA Forum Strategy” for implementation beginning in 2014. The new strategy consists of five major events in 2014: 1. AIAA Science and Technology Forum and Exposition (Winter) – open meeting 2. AIAA Defense and Security Forum and Exposition (Winter/Spring) – classified meeting 3. AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition (Early Summer) – open and U.S. only 4. AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum and Exposition (Mid Summer) – open and U.S. only 5. AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum and Exposition (Late Summer) – open and U.S. only AIAA’s existing technical conferences will meet as part of these forums. But the forum strategy is more than just co-locating existing conferences under larger umbrella forums. It is an attempt to enhance our events to serve not only those members focused in the traditional aerospace technologies but also those working further up the “product chain,” in process execution and mission applications as well as integration and systems. We think this strategy will help AIAA maintain and strengthen our role as the technical leader while becoming more relevant to a larger segment of the aerospace community. We are excited about the evolution of AIAA events and the future of the Institute. Change is never easy, but our current environment calls for it. There will be bumps in the road, but that is why we are planning now for a transition that starts in 2014. Your participation will help make it a great success, not only for our current members and conference attendees, but also for our future ones. For more information about the development of the AIAA Forum Strategy, please visit www.aiaa.org/NewAIAAEventModel/. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or suggestions. Regards, Michael Griffin Robert Dickman Basil Hassan AIAA President AIAA Executive Director AIAA Vice President, Technical Activities • Official Announcements sent to full AIAA membership on June 18 (from Basil Hassan) and June 27 (from Griffin, Dickman, and Hassan) • Details (including concerns raised and mitigation measures) at https://www.aiaa.org/NewAIAAEventModel/ • SATTC has proposed: • Substantial roles in: • Science & Technology Forum (Winter) • Space & Astronautics Forum (Late Summer) • Supporting roles in: • Aviation & Aeronautics Forum (Early Summer) • Propulsion & Energy Forum (Mid-Summer)
Around the ETM Table Highlights from the June ETM Telecon • ECONTC has a new chair, JairusHihn (JPL). • HISTC working on a mentoring project to connect retired AIAA members with YPs, in order to capture knowledge and experiences through oral history papers. • SETC will soon be publishing a new standards document. • LAAATC had joint event on export control with American Bar Association in May. • MGTTC met in June at Kirtland AFB. Will be meeting in Cleveland from Oct. 30-31. • Delta Forum proposal from Lafleur and Khodadoust discussed thoroughly. Forum coordination will likely begin rotating among ETM TCs, starting with ASM 2013, with the repository remaining with the SATTC.
