  2. Overview • Web of Science • Source record • Citation alerts • Times cited in source record • Analyze results feature • Cited reference searching • Essential Science Indicators of UTenn and AAU membership

  3. Citation Index Database • Allows one to search cited references, like searching for an author or subject • Different types of searches: • Who is citing one’s work • Track research based upon an earlier paper • Identify sources of information used by competitors • Who is working in the same area of a given paper

  4. Source Record: Citation Alerts • Receive e-mail whenever someone cites a “source” paper in Web of Science • Must be registered

  5. Source Record: Times Cited • Links to other source records that have correctly cited this paper • May not cover every citation of a paper in the WoS database

  6. Search for Dept. Output • Quick • General search • Address field • SAME • univ SAME tennessee SAME dept SAME (knoxville or 37996) • Look at abbreviations • May not cover all publications by a department

  7. Analyze Results Feature • Search results summary • Limit to 2,000

  8. Cited Reference Searching • Cited Author • To be safe, use 1st author • Cited Work • Cited Year • Look for variations • No citations from references in books, reports and journals that are not Web of Science sources

  9. Suggested Methodology • Detail (Tenure/promotion or departmental output) • Use list of publications • Cited reference search for 1st author and variations for each publication • May limit references retrieved by Year • Quick (Departmental publication counts) • Evaluation of departmental output • General search • SAME operator in Address field • May miss some publications
