  1. SHORT DISTANCE WIRELESS COMMUNICATION NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION (NFC)

  2. HISTORY • Wireless telegraph was invented by Marconi • Initially L-C tuned circuit oscillator transmitter and super regenerative receiver formed the system • one of the most important technologies for intuitive, simple and safe communication

  3. Introduction to NFC • It evolved from the combination of existing contactless technologies • NFC can communicate with existing smart cards and reader, as well as NFC device • Now a days it is generally implemented into mobile phones

  4. How NFC WORKS • NFC communicates via magnetic field induction through loop antennas • Operating range - 13.56 MHz • Working distance: up to 20 cm • It has two operating modes: 1. Passive communication modes 2. Active communication modes

  5. NFC hardware and software • The most important component is NFC controller IC with an antenna • Second important component is secure Element(SE) • An application is written inside Java J2ME compliant mobile phone

  6. Characteristics of NFC • RF power output of several microwatts up to 100 milliwatts. • Principally indoor operation. • Omni- directional built in antennas. • Simple construction and relatively low price . • Battery-operated transmitter and receiver.

  7. Specifications • NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF) • NFC Record Type Definition (RTD) • Smart Poster RTD • Text RTD • Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) RTD
