  2. Early Season • First meeting: • everyone shared challenge theme research • Scope of challenge theme determined • Second meeting: • A trip to the library to try to find biomedical literature • Fieldtrip to a biotechnology lab at Itineris High School

  3. Brainstorming • Third meeting: • Everyone wrote down or drew ideas for new biomedical ideas • Shared and discussed ideas • Combined several ideas to come up with basic idea of the Dii (Diabetic Information Implant)

  4. Meeting With Mentors • Dr. Booth from Itineris High School. We shared our ideas with him and he sent us some peer reviewed journal articles • Jaymie Patterson, a high school student from Itineris High School, helped us do a Pub Med search for related innovations • Tiana Cook, a physicist, taught us about battery storage

  5. Research • Everybody researched a different part of the Dii • Blood battery research • Current blood glucose monitors • Wireless communication (e.g., bluetooth) • Biomedical compatibility • Cost and feasibility • Diabetic patient interest survey • We shared our research with Pi Pod team members • Every member wrote a small summary of their research for our poster • Summaries became part of our presentation

  6. Experimenting • We experimented with our “blood” battery model using Gatorade® • We experimented some more and then some more • We developed a prototype to simulate a carbon nanotube blood battery

  7. Share the Idea • We shared our idea with Trina Brown, a nurse practitioner from Utah Diabetes Clinic • We shared our idea with Dr. Hansen, a physician with lada diabetes • We shared our idea with many adults and children that have diabetes • Modified skit for more formal presentation • Link

  8. Coaches Role • Teach but let team members apply the principles • Set up mentor meetings • Prepare the team members and the mentors • Feedback to team members should be in the form of a question
