What do you think are some of the possible themes of History??? Explain • Come up with at least 2
9 Themes • Continuity and Change • Political and Social Systems • Geography and History • Religion and Value Systems • Economics and Technology • Impact of the Individual • Art and Literature • Diversity • Global Interaction
9 THEMES OF WORLD HISTORY Objectives: SWBAT identify, infer, interpret, and analyze each of themes through examples, definitions, and scenarios
CONTINUITY AND CHANGE • Change is something that is taking place among all societies. Some are quick, while others take place over centuries. For example the shifting role of women. • Continuity is the enduring of traditions. In certain places the political system today is affected by standards set 3000 years ago.
GEOGRAPHY • Geography influences the work people do, the clothes they wear, the food they eat, and how they travel. An example for history would be the Egyptians who have used the Nile River to transport people and goods since the time of the pharaohs.
POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SYSTEMS • Kings and queens, presidents and dictators, elected congress – each society has a way to govern itself. A government tries to keep order within a society and protect it from outside threats. Societies have important institutions including the most basic - family. • Social classes rank people based on wealth, ancestry, occupation, or education.
RELIGIONS AND VALUE SYSTEMS • People since the early times have turned to religion for the answers to such questions as, how was the world created? How can we tell right from wrong? What happens to us after death? • Value systems have also shaped societies like the respect for parents and loyalty to the state as believed by the Chinese.
ECONOMICS AND TECHNOLOGY • Technology and economy are usually linked in that as technology has improved over the years the economy has changed. Certain aspects of the economy have caused trading networks, wars and contributed to the rise or decline of nations.
DIVERSITY • In the present day as well as in ancient times the diversity of human culture is shown by the hundreds of languages people speak. Diversity is also reflected in religions, social systems, art, customs, and forms of government.
IMPACT OF THE INDIVIDUAL • Some people have such an impact on events that we remember them long after they die. Vietnam still honors the Trung sisters who fought against Chinese invaders nearly 2,000 years ago.
GLOBAL INTERACTION • Nations interact in many ways, through trade migration, or through war and conquest. Obviously interaction today is much more instantaneous than it was when people used to travel by oxcart or sailing ship
ART AND LITERATURE • From the early day’s people have created art and literature to reflect their lives and values. Some would do it by stone others by building these great cathedrals dedicated to their god.
